Comments for Beatles, The, Anthology Vol. 1

I can't believe I'm the first person to comment on this masterpiece. Well worth the £20, or whatever it costs, if only for the hilarious cock-ups in "Eight Days a Week" and "No Reply".

As history it is great. As music it is greater. As a fix for a Beatles freak...it's the greatest!

i personally would rather just have ALL the albums.

I am so glad the beatles are back!

When I heard this with my uncle and cousin(we are Beatles nuts who spent a whole 10 hour trip singing the tunes from every Beatles record with the music!), I just loved it all. Plus, "Free as a bird" just made me wish I was a child of the 60's. Oh well-at least I still have the albums!

I really like this one but Anthology 2 is a little better.

Very superior CD! Worth repeated listenings...I hear new stuff everytime I play it! BTW---Does anybody a place on the net that has GOOD pics (JPG) of the Beatles American albums! Beatles '65, Something New, etc? If so, drop me a line. Thanks, Roger

I think that this is probably the worst, if you can call it that, of the Anthologies, and I own all of them. I do like some of the speeches from John and Brian Epstein, however, but this doesn't compare to the amazing music that is on Anthology 2, and even if a lot of Anthology 3 is solo music, the songs are still good.

Volume 1 is ok, but I prefer 2 and 3. The BEATLES are great.

What other group has made a comeback like this? After a long 25 years of waiting, we finally got what we deserved. Brand new songs (with a man who has been dead for 15 years singing lead) and tons of other things never heard before. This CD is especially important to me because it marks the beginning of my obsession with The Beatles which has been going strong for almost a year now.

It's a good album because it has all the different versions and screw up's of the songs. My personal favourites are "Eight Days A Week, Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey and Shout. Plus I like listening to "Moonlight Bay" for a good laugh. But I agree with eric that I'd love to have all the albums.

Alright...you're thinking...the anthology!! Probably the best and most popular Beatles songs, with great sound quality all on the same album, with one hit song after another...right? Well not exactly. I must admit, I was quite disappointed when I listened to this. Most of the songs have horrible sound with a loud fuzzing in the background. The songs they have are quite possibly the lamest Beatles songs out there! For 25 bucks its a ripoff! That's what some would say. Then again, this anthology is very much the Beatles getting together and having a blast. It sort of shows what they had to go through to get their songs up to snuff; its almost like you're sitting right there right by the Beatles, in person, listening to what goes on behind all the great sound tracks you pay for. On a lot of the songs its just the Beatles jacking off, rehearsing, talking and reminising, some of the songs have them live and you can hear the accompaniment of screaming girls (nothing like the live thing!) Some of it is quite funny...I recommend you listen to "You'll be Mine." It is hilarious. It's a total mockery of sappy love songs. On song number 17, they screw up right in the middle and start over, and on a few songs they even forget the words! How many albums have that? Their are also a lot of interviews. So you see, this album is not about high-quality hits. Its about THE BEATLES, a personal look at who they really are, and there is not a single album out there like it. It is humorous, entertaining, witty, and very, very personal to the actual Beatles. Anyone who is a true Beatles fan will need to listen to this anthology!

I really like this LP because it marks the beginning of my Beatle's obsession. I took my mom's & immediately fell in love w/ them. I'm a 2nd generation Beatle's freak!

Pretty cool anthology, though I like 2&3 better because I like their "Rubber Soul" & beyond stuff better. It's great having the original version of "One After 909" & "Leave My Kitten Alone" (I have 4 cats!). No complaints about the sound quality, it is old stuff. The only annoying thing is the talking over the beginning of a few songs. I'm glad they abandoned that idea for Vols. 2 & 3.

The Beatles Anthology Vol. 1 to me is a very good album. After being a fan of theirs for many years and therefore owning all of their albums it is nice to hear some alternate versions of their songs. One song that I feel is great is the early version of "1 After 909". This is a hundred times better than the soupy version on Let it Be. Also, the songs from their Decca Records sessions are great. Finally, I really enjoyed the sound quality of the album. George Martin did a good job mastering it, which makes it hard to believe that the material is over 30 years old.

Now i'm a huge beatle fan; don't get me wrong. But what they've done here, as everyone seems to be so afraid to point out, is make a poor sounding record of songs that simply didn't make it. They didn't make it the first time around, and in my opinion they don't make it this time. Listening to Anthologies I II and III just makes you appreciate how good the REAL versions are.

It's the biggest selling double cd of all time. And they haven't recorded together in twenty five years ! What does that tell you ? You'll never see again from any other group in this lifetime. Free as a Bird is haunting, powerful and beautiful. Wow ! It's magic all over again...

Cry For A Shadow is my favorite. Lots of good stuff. If you don't expoect too much from this it's really easy to enjoy the flow of good music. Most interesting stuff on here is the very early stuff, a breakable 45 & some early tapes made when the three (John, Paul, George) were in their teen-age years. Check out G. harrison singing backing vocals before puberty hit on the earliest stuff!

I think the album is great. I love the No Reply, Eight Days A Week, and One After 909 outtakes. I wish that they would have the finished version of No Reply, but oh well, how many songs can you put on there any way? There are 50 as there is.
