***1/2 (5 star scale) U2's first brush with fame including some dazzling material, such as "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Seconds", "New Years Day", and "40". --j.teel

This is a classic album which certainly launched the boys onto higher things . The recreation of the songs at Redrocks was unbelievable . However the main stand out track for me is 'Drowning Man' . The harmonies and Bono's vocal on this particular track is second to none .

I was lucky enough to have been at the red rocks concert, U2 ruined me for all live shows after that. Bono reached everyone in the theater, people were openly weeping. The MTV film of the concert was unsuccessful in capturing the connection the band made with their audience. I should also note that I had front row seats, close enough to see the steam rising off of Bono's body into the 35 degree air. It was also there I learned about U2's religous beliefs, and with that new knowlegde of them, was able to eek new meanings from their music. Four students from Arizona were given ticket to this show and ended up sitting next to me. They had met U2 at a hotel in Arizona after a show there. They told the band members that they were Christians and U2 opened up to them about the religous convictions, and they all went back to their room for a prayer session. "One way to true way, I will follow".

Excellent albumn where most of the rest of the world learned of the existence of U2. Christian convictions were openly espoused on this albumn. It wasn't until Joshua Tree that they seemed to get away from their God.

Who did the trumpet work on "Red Light"?

The first time I heard this album I fell in love with the song "40" it's a dippy little song, but it's incredibly beautiful. "Two Hearts Beat as One" is absolutley wonderful, and "New Year's Day" has the greatest piano solo ever to be used in a rock song.

"New Year's Day" is still one of the very greatest songs U2 has ever done. It gives me instant chills which last all through the song. "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Like a Song," "2 Hearts Beat as One" and "40" are also fantastic--and everything else is either great or very good.

First U2 masterpiece. Rock transcending compositions. Before this one, they were just a very good and somewhat odd younger rock group. Then they were unique.

This album which came out in March 1983 is very good in its own right. I enjoy listening to it although it comes across as angry because of the use of red writing. Sample song such as "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "New Year''s Day", "Like A Song", "Surrender" and "Red Light". (****/5) rating.
