Comments for U2, POP

With Pop, U2 has made a masterpiece. From the catchy « Discotheque», to Oasis- like ballad « Staring at the Sun », and the trip -hop « Miami », this album simply rocks. Bono's voice is as superb and mesmerizing as ever, Edge's guitar is better and better, and Larry and Adam, I think, did their best work on « Pop ».U2 has reinvented themselves again and the results are amazing. Long live U2 ! They RULE !!!

POP is yet another brilliant U2 album. All the criticism made about 'what it will be like' has been washed down the drain. Adam really lets his bass rip and all the songs have a familiar U2 'edge' to them. I particularly like Discotheque, Do you feel loved, gone, Staring at the Sun, Last night on Earth and Please. I give it an 8/10. It doesn't quite have the same hold on me as Achtung Baby.

This album sucks.....So does U2!

a very good album. I feel that the rating is artifitialy low. Musicly it is very good and stands in good contrast with many of their earlier works.

Apparently there's an error in the rating machine. If I add the ratings of the pleasured comment-writers and mine with 119 x 1 from "u2sucks@crapalbum.com", we got around 160 pts divided by 124. That makes 1.3 > 1.1 currently displayed.

Apparently, somebody isn't very keen on their math.

Lemme see... If we were to take the total ratings of the pleasured comment-writers and add it to 507x1 that "u2sucks@crapalbum.com" submitted, that would give us 557 divided by 512 for a total average of 1.09. Round that off to the nearest tenth, and that would equal 1.1 which is currently displayed.

I love Bono. Its too bad he got killed in that skiing accident. I "Pop" a boner every time I listen to the record, especially "Wake up dead man"

Nouveau post-modern tragedy for the masses! Is it the Simpsons? No, it's ***U2!***. TOO influenced by public exhibitionists (re. Leon Uris) like Norman Mailer, and suffering from a GUILT COMPLEX since Bono stopped his Down with Politicians - Bible Thumping act, U2 have conspired to put together a musical equivalent of that old, old, old (not even post-modern) poem, The Waste Land. Did anyone tell Bono that poetry + rock'n'roll = ..well, a bloody mess. The lyrix to Mofo are all wrong. It isn't Bono's mom who sucks, it's him. The good trax are 'Wake Up Dead Man' (because of the great rhyming lyrics, rare for U2), Staring At The Sun (the only good guitar apart from Discotheque), and Miami (here it comes! CAR CHASE!) There are some really *awful* songs on it too, like especially Last Night On Earth (probably dedicated to himself) and Please (could he please shut up with his Acrobat-style ballads?) Clever, but not good.

SINCE NO ONE REPLIED TO MY COMMENT ABOVE (I CHANGED ADDRESSES RECENTLY) LET ME ELABORATE. POST-MODERNISM IS JUNK, IN MY OPINION, AND IT ALLOWS ARTISTS TO DRESS UP PIECES OF CRAP IN VELVET DRESSES AND CALL IT ART. BONO HIMSELF SAID IN THE FLY, "EVERY ARTIST IS A CANNIBAL - EVERY POET IS A THIEF; THEY BOTH KILL THEIR INSPIRATION AND SING ABOUT THEIR GRIEF". SURE, U2'S RIGHTEOUS ACTIVIST ENERGY WAS JARRING AT TIMES, BUT THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO KILL IT. NOW THEY'RE JUST RIPPING OFF IDEAS FROM '??ICONS??' LIKE BUKOWSKI AND WILLIE BURROUGHS AND WRITING GARBAGE LIKE "IF YOU WEAR THAT VELVET DRESS". BY THE WAY, pop IS A CONCEPT ALBUM. I'LL ELABORATE ON THAT IN MY NEXT POSTING. IF ANY OF YOU OUT THERE HAS A U2 INTERPRETATIONS PAGE (LIKE THE PEARL JAM ONE) PLEASE LET ME KNOW BECAUSE THIS IS REALLY A GOOD ONE!

STILL, THOUGH THIS LP GETS PRETTY LAME AT TIMES, IT RATES FAR MORE THAN 0.2. SAY 7.2, OR 8.0.

POP IS A BRILLIANT ALBUM.MY FAVOURITE TRACKS ARE"DISCOTHEQUE","STARING AT THE SUN", "LAST NIGHT ON EARTH" AND "GONE".
E-MAIL: ANTHONY@BARKING.COLLEGE.AC.UK
BONO SINGS BRILLIANTLY, WHILE THE EDGE'S ACOUSTIC GUITAR SOUNDS BRIGHT.LARRY MULLEN JNR HANDLES ALL THE BEATS WELL WITH FLOOD (REAL NAME MARK ELLIS) DEALS WITH THE DRUM LOOPS.HOWIE B (HOWARD BERNSTEIN) DEALS WITH THE SYNTHESISERS. ADAM CLAYTON REALLY LETS HIS BASS RIP ESPECIALLY ON .HE SHOULD BE BETTER NOW HE IS 38.THE LYRICS DEAL WITH SEX, DRUGS, ROCK N ROLL,SPIRITUALITY,RELIGION AND VIOLENCE.MUSICALLY, U2 WERE INFLUENCED BY TRIP-HOP BANDS SUCH AS TRICKY, MASSIVE ATTACK, THE PRODIGY AND THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS. IS A TECHNO INFLUENCED SONG ABOUT BONO MOTHER WHO DIED. IS A BEATLES/OASIS BALLAD. IN MY OPINION, U2 HAVE SUCCESSFULLY REINVENTED THEMSELVES ONCE AGAIN WITH POP AS THEY DID WITH ACHTUNG BABY.WELL DONE BONO AND CO AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

Wow, a -5.4 rating. This album definitely sucks!!!!
E-MAIL: FluffyQ@Hotmail.com
DUH! Who''s the pervo who made up that -5.4 rating? He''s going to get a whipping for that.
Yet another classic from U2. If your still waiting for thoseboys from the desert to come back then once again, stay awayfrom this one. Excellent production again from Flood, and more amazing guitar sound from the Edge (they just keep pushing this guy to extremes, when he runs out I think U2 will be done). Also Adam`s bass playing is the best ever. Heset most of the grooves up for each song along with Larry. He should be good now, he`s 37. And Bono`s lyrics seem to go back, the spiritual one we all remember, asking the samequestions that made him famous, only this time with morematurity. It`s a different sound for U2, but after listeningto it now a few time, you can really hear the old U2 saturated in there new sound. I realized this band hasreally never changed they way they approach music, they justtry to re-invent it differently each time. My favs are:"Gone", "If God Will Send His Angels", "Do You Feel Loved","Please", and "Staring AT The Sun". They are slowly creatinga legacy that makes the beatles look like New Kids On TheBlock. I give it a 9 out of 10. Close, but no cigar fellas.
