Comments for Williams, Vanessa, The Sweetest Days

E-MAIL: dstahl@vnet.ibm.com
'Sweetest Days' will be every bit as popular as 'Save the Best for Last' (in fact, I believe Vanessa said the same writing team created it but I didn't check the CD notes to verify). My immediate impression was that 'Betcha Never' was my favorite--after a couple weeks it still is. I didn't really take to 'Higher Ground' when I first heard it. But it has been growing on me and now is probably one of the top 4 for me--along with the 2 above and 'Sister Moon'.

"You Can't Run" is definitely the top song here on this latest offering by Vanessa--enjoyed the whole album--isn't "Sister Moon" great?

Vanessa takes a lot of risks that pay off on her latest release. "The Way That You Love" and "Betcha Never" stick to a safe pop/soul formula, but "Higher Ground," "Ellamental" and "Sister Moon" push the envelope and come out winning! Some of the production is a little too quirky (such as that organ in the otherwise beautiful ballad "Constantly") and I don''t agree with the positioning of the harmonica in "Sister Moon" (a sax would''ve been better) but overall this album is mature and experimental, and Vanessa should be proud.
I just bought the CD today when I travelled all the way to NYC from Williamstown, MA to meet Vanessa in person. She was absolutely wonderful. She is just as gracious and beautiful in person as I expected. The CD. I listened to the tape on the way back to school. Vanessa gives us 11 new songs demonstrating the amazing range of talent encompassed by her. Substance is the key here. It`s destined to become a classic. Of the 11 new songs I liked 9 right away. `The Way You Love Me` is a beautiful ballad finally-gotten love. I loved the beat and to whom can`t `Nessa say "Don`t Stop, stop the love, you know you`ve the rhythm." Great Song!`Betcha Never` was written and produced by Babyface and delivered with unarming sass by Nessa. Tell him girl!`The Sweetest Days` is classic!`You Don`t Have to Say Your Sorry` is delivered with Vanessa`s uniquely beautiful voice with romantic strings in the back. Very nice `Nessa!`Ellamental` ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!! INSTANT CLASSIC!!! A FABULOUS TRIBUTE TO ELLA FITZGERALD THAT ONLY VANESSA COULD DO!! Betcha Never thought Vanessa could scat. My Absolute Favorite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!`Sister Moon` is a jazzy remake of the song by Sting. Vanessa easily holds her own here. Vanessa + Jazz = Magnifico.`You Can`t Run` is another Babyface song. Listen to the words and the itonations of the voice. Wow!`Constantly` mixes soft guitars and the natural beauty of `Nessa voice. A sure hit!`Long Way Home` is a poignant closing to a well developed and performed album. A star is re-born!!The other two songs, `Higher Ground` and `Moonlight Over Paris,` I liked the second time I heard them.Hello Barbara!
