Comments for Uncle Bonsai, Boys Want Sex In The Morning

This has *got* to be my fave UB album. The Acapella doo-wop version of "The Star Spangled Banner" simply has to be heard to be believed. (I was way bummed when it was not added to the "Inessential" CD.) Then there is the incredible harmonies on "Heartache", the poignancy of "Lois Lane" and the humour/wry truth of "Cheerleaders on Drugs". And finally there is the cover art...
Recorded live at the Backstage in Seattle Washington, may 2nd & 3rd, 1986Stunning live set, 3 voices, 1 guitar, and the damndest songs! Bonsais songs run the gamut from sensitive ballads loss and learning ("Silent Night") tostories of inexplicable behavior ("Isaac`s Lament" is about a man who commits suicide because "The Love Boat" is cancelled). Uncle Bonsai (now deceased--long live Electric Bonsai Band) is not well known outside of Seattle, but it`s fans are very dedicated (I for one, amup at 4am entering this listing). Join the cult!

I have several UB albums and have yet to find one I don't like. UB's wry humor definitely comes out on this early one, with "Send My Body Home," "Cheerleaders on Drugs," and "Don't Put it in Your Mouth" particularly good. But they can also be serious, with "Silent Night," a mournful tribute to a deceased father and "We're only in it for the Children," about a bad marriage. Andrew Ratshin's falsetto, Ashley Kristen's mezzosoprano and Arni Adler's alto are a great mix.
