I agree. the disc sounds more like 70's fusion more than anything. although fuze and medeski may be from classical jazz background, but the intensity of their improvision as well as composition on this disc is quite obviously grounded in rock and funk. so anyone who wants to listen to some fusion with more attitude (as oppose to Kenny G's and David Sanborn's in this world), they should check out this disc.

I think this disc is fairly creative compared to other fusion related releases. For example, the vocals are very instrumental and all the other instruments are very dynamic and unpredictable. The song Lillies that Fester ... is a great example of the talent on this disc. It is not very often you hear 4 or 5 people blending together so well to produce some at times mellow, at times spirited, at times jammin music. This disc reminds me of Frank Gambale and Al DiMeola wrapped up in one mind blowin artistic statement. And this drummer, Gene Lake, man he is just smokin. It will be a long time before I stop freqently listening to this disc.

corrections that should have made the liner notes: writers credits: Vog, Gloria Ascending and Slow Blues For Fuzy''s Mama written by John Medeski Pacifica, Pineapple, Quest, Freelance Brown and Lillies That Fester written by David Fiuczynski 122 St. Marks by JoJo Mayer Fima''s Sunrise by Fima Ephron furthermore : JoJo Mayer is drumming on Quest, Freelance Brown and Lillies that fester. not Gene Lake as indicated also the lyric ".... finding germs stuck in the mud .... " in Freelance Brown should read ".... finding GEMS (!) stuck in the mud .... " ( duh!!!!!!!!) how Gramavision fucked this up is beyond me. I apologize for any confusion. peace - david fiuczynski ps - there are a number of references in the words and music of Freelance Brown hinting at it''s origin. Can you figure it out? e-mail me at lunarcrush@iname.com if you know the answer. No one has been able to figure this out yet.
I`d classify this album as Fusion instead of Jazz.
