Midnight Marauders was an intriguing and smartly paced collection that ranged from descriptive verbal essay on city life to confrontational taunts, comic expositions, denunciations, and even quasi - religios theorizing. While their celebrated hip-hop/jazz roots were often evident, the group also utilized fusion, Urban Contemporary, Afro-Latin, and funk samples, while Q-Tip's rap style was alternately cool and deadpan, reflective, analytical, satirical, and disgusted and angry. There was precious little gangsta posturing or sexist rhetoric, and such numbers as "Sucka Nigga," "God Lives Through," "Electric Relaxation," and "Award Tour" were cleverly delivered and brilliantly arranged and composed. Here's an ensemble that deserves mad props both inside and outside of rap's arena. -DJ Mikal
