Comments for Black Sheep, Non-Fiction

Non-Fiction is truly a brilliant and incredibly complex album which should make most artists red with shame at their own extreme laziness, as evidenced by comparison to this album. Amazing.

I was truly disappointed when I heard Black Sheep's second album. After years of anticipation, waiting for any response to the Wolf album, my heart was broken. Their first album was, still is, and always will be the top 1 or 2 rap albums to ever go plastic. Impeccably tight rhymes over some of the tightest sample cuts have yet to be matched in the decade following their premiere release. I was expecting a close follow up effort on their behalf and was unfortunately disappointed. To the average listener, the rhymes were "good" and the music was "fly", but this is not the case. As I have many times dissected "Wolf"'s total package, it is obvious that the sophmore album fell short. The rhymes attempted to flow, be funny and tight all at the same time but were just not so....(I will continue on the next post)

It seems to be the case that rappers, and music in general, experience a letdown in quality after the premiere album. This is the case with Black Sheep, and another phenom from the late 80''s, Special Ed. I rate Special Ed''s "Youngest in Charge" album at the top of my list with Sheep. He went gold in 1989 and every follow up album afterward just could not compare to his first one. His rhyme pattern (sentence end and within internal rhymes) is on the verge of poetic or artistic, with a dose of light hearted humor. No gangsta''s or nigga''s or killa''s here or in the "Wolf" album, just some phat music. Back to the point: he fell off. Sheep fell off. Tribe has been falling since after their second album, Pearl Jam fell, it happens everywhere. I believe this to be because that their first album (any group''s) is the sum of their life''s experiences and practices to that point. Up until that time they have been refining their first songs from the time they were 12 to 19, etc. In rare instances does the curve incline as opposed to decline. Thus, it is understandable that Black Sheep experience a dramatic fall. Although I wish they had not and would still kick some phat shit, I understand.
Solid sophomore effort. A bit too long, but high quality."Without A Doubt" best track.
