Comments for Til Tuesday, Voices Carry

A one song album. This is pure garbage.

I agree, this is a one-song album. Only Voices Carry is really listenable. Fortunately, Mann grew a lot as a writer in her subsequent work. Plus the sound of the albums steadily becomes warmer and more organic. This album has a grating artificial sound to me.

I wouldn't call this a one-song album. "Looking Over My Shoulder" is also an excellent song. I would therefore call it a two-song album.

Aimee Mann is just another example of an infinitely powerful artist who was initially grabbed by the 80's Pop Culture Fiasco. Her latest song Just What You Are (sound clip) shows how she's blossomed in the nineties.

While I agree that this is their least successful album, I still like a couple of the other songs besides "Voices Carry." "You Know The Rest" and "Maybe Monday" are also not bad but mostly because of Aimee's singing, not the songwriting.

I like the album and think the songs are great. It's fun to listen to. The thing people might not like about it is that it is very synth-pop idiomatic. I think that the arrangements are a bit too sparse, but even Tears For Fears had just figured that out in '85. Buy the album if you like 80's synth-pop. If you are a faky 90's genXer who takes pride in meaningless bitterness and distortion, you woln't like it.

"Voices Carry" is the only great song on this record, with a few other listenable ones, but it's an interesting look back at what the radio sounded like in 1985.

I was the guitarist with the group and a co writer on all the songs on this record. I like many of the songs but I feel they're lost in the cold wash of 80's production values and perhaps an immature band musically. I mean I can't actually listen to this for enjoyment and haven't, ever, but the songs in their most raw form I think are pretty good. Why doesn't Celine Dion do like an overwrought version of "You Know the Rest" because 'til tuesday were not the right band for a power ballad and that's how that song was treated.

I love Til Tuesday, & have stumbled on this page....well done, and I think their music stands for itself-timeless
Voices Carry is not only `Til Tuesday`s first album, but it is also their biggest commercial breakthrough. The US top-10 hit here is "Voices Carry." No one is so emotive or expressive a singer as Aimee Mann, and this LP stands as a bold effort indeed.
