Comments for Mental as Anything, Cyclone Raymond

Named after a cyclone that was hanging around our North coastat the time, this album is not the Mentals strongest work. The lead vocals are shared by Martin and Greedy (as far as Ican work out Pete and Reg only sing backing vox.) and it`sbasically a boppy, fun little collection of songs. Theatypical standout is Greedy`s fantastic "World Seems Difficult," (with echoes of the melody of Supertramp`s "Logical Song"):this keyboard drenched, ethereal song is just great with itsquirky sentiment and genuine naive romanticism. It featuredon the soundtrack to "The Big Steal" but otherwise disappearedwithout a trace. It`s the only song on the album with this sound and, while songs like "In the Sunshine" are good too, it seems a pity that they didn`t pursue this production direction further (not necessarily with a drum-machine).Ian Thomas
