Comments for Sun Ra, Purple Night

I may be predjudiced, as this was the disc that got me into Ra`s work. I think that this is a lovely session of rare and distinctive quality. This has a large contingent of players and some of the tribalism present in Ra`s far-out material, but also a gentle, pretty sensibility to it. It`s focused and extremely loose at the same time. Tracks 3 and 4 are exceptional highlights. The recording has a beautiful sound to it - the effort was made to capture Ra`s sound in clear, crisp audio (no small feat). Perhaps the last truly great session by a man who is an unheard giant in modern music.Note : track 2 is the "Advice to Medics" theme, track 5 contains themes from "Atlantis".
