Comments for Pere Ubu, The Modern Dance

E-MAIL: mcfarsc@springfield.grumman.com
They were, truly, the great unheard band of their time. The other things going on at the time are peanuts compared to this. Roxy Music (when Eno was there) and the Velvet Underground are primary influences. The music is some of the most complex and sophisticated since the golden age of Can and Captain Beefheart. All of the players are significant on their instruments, and the resultant rocking squall on this album demands to be heard! Absolutely brilliant music, the high point of the American Underground scene. By the way, this and the other early Ubu LPs will be coming out on a boxed set on Geffen records, slated for release in summer of 96.

The first four tracks alone put this at the top of my list of all-time favourite records. A near-perfect record. It''s amazing to think it''s twenty years old. It sounds as though it were recorded five minutes ago.
Their first studio album, recorded in Cleveland Nov. 1977.If you`ve never heard Ubu, you`ve missed the greatest US band of the past two decades. Fronted by 300-pounder David Thomas, who sounds like Mickey Mouse over a solid-rock base with the weirdestsynthesiser condiment you`re likely to hear.
