Although "Music From The Tar Ponds" contains remixes of previously released compositions, it also embodies over 30 minutes of new material. Gone are the harsh edits and crude samples, replaced by a crafty collection of curious experiments. "Music From The Tar Ponds" represents a kind of aesthetic terminus - music can`t go much further in this direction. It`s at the end of a line of particularly single-minded electronic music that begins with Lou Reed`s "Metal Machine Music" and continues through The Butthole Surfers` "Locust Abortion Technician" to ever-more-minimal extremes. The murderous, abrasive regularity of these tracks can be oppressive at first, but when you assimilate it, it`s invigorating - it`s cleansing and somehow purifying, and after a while, it even becomes comforting.
