Comments for Cole, Holly, Temptation

A fresh and innovative release from one of the most exciting jazz vocalists around. A collection of some of Tom Waits` finest compositions, "Temptation" broadens the horizons of both Cole`s interpretations and Waits` material. "Jersey Girl" and "I Want You" are given highly enjoyable pop treatments, and "Falling Down" is given a downhome, bluesy reading. "(Looking for) The Heart of Saturday Night" is given just the right amount of country twang, and "Train Song" has a delightful swing. Other Waits songs, such as "Little Boy Blue" and "Invitation to the Blues," seem written just for Holly; their jazzy tempos and melodies paired with unique lyrics fit Cole`s voice perfectly. The title track has a hauntingly seductive quality, and "Take Me Home" showcases Holly`s voice to perfection. The album does contain a few lukewarm moments, however: "Tango Til They`re Sore" is a less than memorable tune, "Soldiers Things" is mediocre, and "Frank`s Theme" is just plain odd. Had the album been a twelve-song collection instead of sixteen, the project would`ve been a tighter, more consistent release. But never mind; "Temptation" is an adventurous and exciting release that Holly Cole can be proud of and one that her fans can cherish.

Lucious, tough, entrancing, erotic, playful, nostalgic. I love this CD! Don't play the title track at work - guys can't leave their desks for long periods after hearing it!
