Comments for Skafish, Skafish

This is a highly underrated album. Rolling Stone and others have dismissed it as "cold fish". Yes; the album showers the listener with a bleak landscape of misfits, dead-end capitalism, spiritual decline..have I left something out? But all of this subject matter is perfect fodder for alternative music, and Skafish and his band always have something to say. The album blends 60''s sensibilities with alternative/new-wave presentation. I suspect Skafish is a do-wap guy in his warped heart. So, all the songs have great melodic presentation, rhythm, backup vocals, but most with new-wave twists. My favorites are Guardian Angel, a lovely peon to near-distanced love; also "We''ll see a Psychiatrist" as the most disturbing number I can possibly imagine recording. Shudders. If I have any complaint with this 10-rated album, it''s in the song ordering. Guardian Angel seems out of place, as does Romantic Lessions. I suggest a reordering here since there''s no CD that I know of. Oh, if you want a copy, I strongly suggest visiting Chicago, which is where I got a used copy on Vinyl. There are many record stores along Broadway between Fullerton and Addison. good luck!
Excellent group with lots of potential. Follow up LP in 1983 not nearly as good. After that the group seems to have disappeared. I`d be curious to know where they (and leader Jim Skafish) are today. A truly gifted composer/arranger.
