This is my favorite album of all time! Though some may consider it dated I consider it an excellent example of diversity and character in music. Out of the 9 songs many different types of music are explored. The LP opens up with the Electro rock of "Framework", a song that would be completely remixed for 7" and 12" release, and then goes into the Electro Waltz of "Astro". The album continues with a slightly altered version of the bands debut single "Science" with it's quircky hook. "Romance" is similar to something found on an early Gary Numan album and "Trail to Istanbul" has an excellent vocal and music hook which should have made this the third single from the album. Side 2 opens with the agressive Electro rock sound of "Secret days" Then goes to the creepy "Mannequin". "Neon probe" is done is a robotic, monotone style while the albums closer "Zero song" is a 9+ minute Goth epic about Armageddon. The only disappointment is that the vocals are very low in the mix making it hard to understand what is being said and there is no lyric sheet. The band did release an Indie single in 81, that was not as good, and then disappeared. If you love the strange sounds of early 80's electronics then this is well worth seeking out. A little naive in musicianship, but generally a good album. Framework is an excellent song, probably the one of the best released during the period. Berlin Blondes also released the following singles - Science / Mannequin EMI 5031 Framework / Zero Song EMI 5147B Marsielle / The Poet SCRATCH SCR005

i was a big gary numan fan around the time of this album and whilst queing to enter has farewell concert at wembeley arena many things were offered for sale bootleg t shirts bootleg tapes the useual amongst these thing was a magazine poorly printed for the occasion and its name escapes me now but amongst the bands featured in this rag were the berlin blondes a band id never heard off but non the less looked interesting. so upon my return to the humble north west i looked up the album mentioned "building on the sands " i recall . what an album it was so fresh so exiting rather like the kaiser chiefs now it just stood out from the big players of the time the spans , duran etc. so energetic. i still to this day dig out my rather por vinyl copy and give it a wirl.only hope i can find a cd version..........heres looking . and yes i still enjoy the god that is gary numan..
The name of the magazine for sale at the Numan farewell gigs is 'Syn-Rock'. I wasn't there, but it was also available mail order afterwards!
