Comments for The La's, The La's

Pure ear candy, and that''s a good thing. "The La''s" is perhaps the most famous early 90s release by a band that was never heard from again. Heavily influenced by all of my favorite musical styles, from "you know who" to the Hollies to US southern pop.
Excellent debut. Lee Mavers and crew are pure pop genius in every sense of the word. Hailing from Liverpool, England, the same breeding ground as "you know who" (and if you don`t, shame on you) it`s clear to see there is something in the water there. But it wasn`t to last, and it now seems that this is the only full album you`ll be able to get. No matter, it`s worth it. My rating 9.5 out of 10.

This album came to me at the exact right time in my life, a touchstone if you will, and it's melodies still have a hold on that certain transitory image of that period. So also with the band, whose quick rise and fall were perfect: they stayed around to make a great album and then left the fifteen minute machine behind for oblivion. Lyrically it's not a triumph or even impressive, and honestly if I didn't have that connection I might not even enjoy it as I do. But it's easy to forgive imperfection in those you love. Obscure yet famous; talented yet simple, hard to find but familiar. More bands should travel this road.
