Comments for Saint Etienne, Tiger Bay

Fave track I Was Born On Christmas Day, but so many great ones...

a HUGE disappointment.the release of tiger bay in early 1994 wasn't a patch on debut foxbase alpha or its follow-up so tough.gone was the experimentation which had made the band a must to follow between 1990 and 1993 and in its place were 2nd rate single releases and a collection of mainly sub-standard tracks based on old folk songs. urban clearway,on the shore and cool kids of death escape criticism, but the lame pale movie, horrible like a motorway, and the sickly-sweet hug my soul ended a run of fine et singles. not sure why(or how!)anybody could possibly rate this as a 10. steve's individual track ratings for, SAINT ETIENNE-TIGER BAY urban clearway(8),former lover(5),hug my soul(6),like a motorway(6),on the shore(8),marble lions(6),pale movie(6), cool kids of death(8),western wind(7),tankerville(7),the boy scouts of america(6) TOTAL73points/11tracks=rating6.63 fans of saint etienne would almost certainly be disappointed by the bands b-sides for the aforementioned singles, with perhaps highgate road incident(pale movie b- side)and i buy american records(hug my soul cd single track) the exception.the like a motorway single was not only backed by horrible remixes but made up a dreadful 3 track cassette single with the awful sushi rider and the waste of time that is you know i'll miss you when i'm gone. steve rynne, october 2005.
