Comments for Can, Tago Mago

Track 1 is incredibe after you get into it, especially the Sonic-Youth-ish layering of guitars. Overtly 70's progressive rock but the rhythms are so intense, ala Miles Davis' 70's work. Track 3 is even better - it really winds its way into your brain. The other three sides of the album all explore their chosen concepts quite thoroughly, and in a very "headsy" manner. But Side 1 is to me the major acheivement by this seminal and unheard band.

The hypnotic, trance-like quality of much of Can's music should be mentioned. They are still cited an influence by many Techno artists - though Can are NOT a synthesiser band. Using ordinary instruments to achieve extraordinary results describes them quite well.

A shorter version (5:39) of Hallejuwah can be found on "Anthology".

Impressive. The only questionable piece is "Aumgn" which is, to my opinion is a bit too long and boring. "Peking-O" is much much better (even with respect to "musical debauchery" which was brought to the level of fine art); "Bring..." is real great although when you listen to it first, say, 3-4-5 times it may look like a ballast put just to fill the space on the vinyl. I agree that this is a required album.

THIS ALBUM IS WONDERFUL!!!! It is an aquired taste, though. Many of the tracks display their studies with Karlheinz Stockhausen. The tracks "Oh Yeah" and "Halleluwah" are Can's funkier moments. Aumgn is closer to 20th century music of Stockhausen, Varese, Cage, or George Crumb.

Better than Floyd for the same period.
Tracks 1-3 and 7 are more standard progressive rock songsCan style. Some powerful vocals, although vague lyrics.`Mushroom` was covered by The Jesus and Mary Chain during Mid `80s.Tracks 4-6 are the most challenging and experimental.`Halleluhwah` has a funkier style with some heavy drumming sessions. Quite repetitive and about 8mins too long. The other two are more freeform and psychedelic, veryelectronic with echo-chamber sound effects. Quite disturbingtracks if not in the mood! Resembles TDs `Alpha Centauri` or Floyds `Saucerful of Secrets`. This and their mellower 1973 `Future Days` are highly recommended CDs.
