Comments for Cheap Trick, Next Position Please

Nicknamed Next Producer Please by critics, Next Position Please remains as one of Cheap Trick's best. Once fans get over the fact that this album was an experiment in style and except the semi-acoustic sound, they'll come to love it. Every song is a keeper. My personal favorite track is "Invader's Of The Heart". The drums on that track are fantastic. Why doesn't Bun E. play like that anymore? This album also marks (if I'm not mistaken) the first Cheap Trick song ("I Can't Take It") to be written exclusively by Robin Zander.

An uneven album. The title track stands among Rick Nielsen's best songwriting ever, but some other songs -- such as the Motors' "Dancin' The Night Away" -- are rough to get through. "Younger Girls" and "I Don't Love Here Anymore" are also sub-par Cheap Trick songs, and "You Say Jump" is sort of the third version of "I Want You To Want Me" ("How Are You?" off "Heaven Tonight" being the second version). The "extra" tracks that were originally only on the cassette version in 1983 ("Don't Make Our Love A Crime" and "You Talk Too Much") are throwaways. Still, there are some great moments, such as "I Can't Take It," "Borderline," "Heaven's Falling," "Y.O.Y.O.Y." and of course the great title track. On the whole, a disappointment with some bright spots.

A nice change of pace. Every song is excellent. This album really grows on you. Ian Tayler had a hand in production on one of the songs. He also produced (along with the band) Cheap Trick's new untitled album.

"Borderline" is one of the better songs on the album. "Dancin' The Night Away" is one of their better live songs I've ever heard. There was great audience participation when it was peformed.

Todd Rundgren is all over this recording. Todd and Rick are old buddies. I believe Rick even did a stint in Todd''s Nazz after TR left and before Nazz died. "I Can''t Take It" and "Heaven''s Falling" are completely interchangeable between Cheap Trick and TR, although both are great pop songs. Zander goes out of his way to sing like Todd.
This album was Produced, Engineered & Mixed by Todd Rundgren*Produced by Cheap Trick and Ian Taylor. This was the band`sseventh full-length studio album and the second album to featureJon Brandt at bass player. Most of the album is filled with theRick Nielsen/Robin Zander music we all love, along with a unique situation in the song "3-D" co-written by Nielsen and BunE. Carlos. An added pleasure is the Todd Rungren song "Heaven`s Falling," which has to be the album`s sleeper hit.The album is a treat for Cheap Trick fans as well as ToddRundgren afficianados.

Classic Rock? You betcha - but then again did 'Trick do anything but classic, crunchy powerpop-rock? No, they didn't. This album is slightly less of a metal album than their previous effort, some might even say it's a return to the 'Dream Police' sound. Who cares? As long as Rick 'The Puppet' Nielsen gives us his good ol' trademark of high energy, melodic popsongs about, well, the lovebuzz - everything is ok.
