Cheap Trick at their best. This is what I keep comparing new Cheap Trick albums to. Which probably isn't a good idea. I wonder if they're even capable of rocking like this again.

Yes, this is one of the best CT albums. However, let's not forget that Side 2 (for those of us who have it on vinyl) has a few clinkers, too, like "Taking Me Back" and "On The Radio," which are really wimpy-ass songs. All told, the classics on this album -- "Surrender," "Auf Wiedersehen," "California Man," "High Roller," "Heaven Tonight," etc. -- are SO-O-O classic that the album may be unfairly set as a model. The 1997 album "Cheap Trick" is actually a more consistent album, and even "Dream Police" has a better cohesiveness to it, song by song.

It's unfair to compare their newer albums with classics like this one. Heaven Tonight is about as good as Cheap Trick gets, outside of concert recordings. As far as their new album (untitled, 1997) is concerned, it doesn't even come close.

Heaven...The first time i heard this i was gangly and surging with jr.high hormone juice...these older craftsmen outta rockford illinois put the proper spin on the american teen diaspora...as i sit here listening to a streaming audio live show circa 1997 on liveconcerts.com, i realize this band is indestructible...i highly reccomend an album left off this on-line discography "BUDOKAN II" released in '93 by Epic just prior to the boxset...It is a worthwhile find featuring many of the tracks from the "heaven tonight" lp in their original fiery live performances circa '77...a must have companion to the original "Budokan"...

it has surrender - who cares about the other 10 songs (which are mostly great if you ever get around to hearing them). "Surrender" is the anthem of the 70''s which i wasn''t alive for.
