Comments for Church, The, Sometime Anywhere

This is the last of four albums produced for Arista Records, the US label that saw the Australian band break through with their album "Starfish". (Buy it.) Presumably, sales of SA were less than inspiring, so The Church (now down to just 2 of the original 4 members) are on their own from now on. This is a beautiful album, lush with sound, with songs ranging from the superficial (2 places at Once) to free structured sound bites (Angelica) to attention grabbers (Fly Home, Day of the Dead,Dead Man's Dream). I wouldn't be without it,but then I'm a dedicated Church fan. If you get hooked on this band, there's plenty of music to enjoy. This isn't the album I'd recommend to Church Newbies, though. I guess this album represents an "acquired taste". I love it ! Brian Smith

I must completely agree with bsmith's comments above - this is definetly not an album for listeners unaccustomed to the oddities of The Church. A thoroughly unaccessable album, this album is as one reviewer put it "pop suicide". All in all this is a great album though, and actually breaks some new ground for the band. A really inspired set of songs, and the EP material is as good if not better. Highly recommended.

A wonderful but patchy album. Longtime band mate Peter Koppes is notably absent from this album, but it still has moments of brilliance. For me, the outstanding tracks are "Loveblind," "Two Places at Once," "Fly Home," and "Authority." Seek out the version with the bonus album "Someplace Else" -- the tracks are just as strong as anything on SA.
available in limited edition with bonus disc containing 7 additional songs (not remixes)
