Comments for Prolapse, Pointless Walks To Dismal Places

polygon review
Debut album from the Leicester (UK) noiseniks displays a tuneful sensibility lurking behind the bizarre rants of shouty frontman Scottish Mick and his co-conspirator Linda Steelyard. The interplay between these two distinctive vocalists is a major selling point for this LP, as it would continue to be throughout Prolapse's recording career. They got the balance right straight away, although musically the album does in retrospect lack the layered noise which was to become a trademark of later releases. In fact, this is probably a good thing - it means that melodic numbers like the taster single "Doorstop Rhythmic Bloc" have room to breathe. Elsewhere the group display a versatility that they would continue to show on later records, but never again all on one LP - punky thrashing on "Headless In A Beat Motel", pure art-pop indulgence on "Burgundy Spine", something approaching an ambient chill-out vibe on "Hungarian Suicide Song" and of course the hilarious stand-up argument set to music that is seven-minute closer "Tina This Is Matthew Stone".
