Comments for Coltrane, John, Crescent

I think I can say some more. Recorded about 8 months before A Love Supreme, it plumbs some of the emotions, but finds a more melancholy and disturbing setting for them (the exception being the light "Bessie's Blues"). The band plays very well here (check out Elvin Jones on the well-names "The Drum Thing") but falls just shy of the singular mind they'd find on ALS. A great one, especailly for those who can't get enough of "THE quartet."

I disagree entirely. This record captures a beautiful vibe of Trane that is difficult to find in any of his other work. Listen to his interaction with McCoy on ''Wise One.'' This is a beautiful example of Trane''s true voice and inner strength. ALS captures Trane in a different progression of moods, thus, it is unfair to compair the two (regardless of the time-frame of their productions). ALS IS truly beautiful, I mean not to take anything away from it, though because it was cut only months after Crescent, the latter is often overlooked.
Well, all I can say is: A MASTERPIECE!
