The album to get started into jazz. Features the greatest artists (Miles, Coltrane, Adderly, Evans, Chambers, Cobb) playing the greatest music. Started the modal jazz movement (improvisation based on scales rather than chords).

Beautiful group improvisation by some of the centuries most creative musicians. An essential album for any music lover.

One of the zeniths in musical expression... I am continually amazed at both the clarity of its vision, and the range of music lovers that are touched by its magic.

THIS IS, WITHOUT A DOUBT, ONE OF THE GREATEST JAZZ ALBUMS OF ALL TIME. THE PERSONNEL INCLUDE JOHN COLTRANE ON TENOR SAX, CANNONBALL ADDERLY ON ALTO, BILL EVANS ON PIANO AND JAMES COBB ON DRUMS. THIS IS ALSO ONE OF THE FIRST JAZZ RECORDINGS TO EXPERIMENT WITH MODES. MANY MODERN JAZZ MUSICIANS ARE DOING COVERS OF SONGS FROM THIS ALBUM, AND MANY PEOPLE ARE WRITING LYRICS TO THESE PIECES. IT ONLY SEEMS TO GET BETTER AND MORE INSPIRATIONAL AS TIME GOES BY.

This piece of music touches you in many ways. On the opening track (So What) the building up of two notes one an octave higher than the other leads to the inevitable crash of symbols which always leaves you surprised. Its like the skipped heartbeat, the caught breath, the sudden smile.

By the way, an original STEREO pressing (6-eye Columbia) has a value of $500.00+.

I think it's a bit overrated. Some of the tunes are nice, it has a nice 50's atmosphere to it, and the piano player has a pretty sound.

SIMPLY THE BEST JAZZ ALBUM EVER MADE.

I listened to the reissue recently - I still think the album''s a bit overrated, but "So What" especially is perfect and lovely.
