Ian Gillan and Roger Glover have complained about this album and listenting to this album, it's easy to understand why. The band sounds tired and really uninspired to be here. The songwriting is weak, ranging from poor to middling. Plus, the lack of any real vocal power from Gillan and real guitar power from Blackmore makes House of Blue Light, the weakest of the DP album catalog.

House of ....... is much underrated. An experimental album with some very good songs.

House....reminds me of Fireball, an experimental album which has some great songs and some just-okay songs on it. The great tracks on the CD include Bad Attitude, Unwritten Law and Mitzi Dupree.

I remember being a bit disappointed in this album at the time it was released. I didn't like the "modern" sound (mid-80s), and it was the first album with this line-up that carried some weak tracks. Still there are some really good songs on it, songs like Bad Attitude, Strangeways, The Spanish Archer and Mitzi Dupree (a true classic - when will we get hear it live?). A good album, but Ritchie is soloing a little bit too much (and I love it) ....

The 2nd reunion album and surprise!, it''s not all that great. A very sterile feel to the entire project, which considering the polarized Blackmore/Gillan camps, is understandable. There are some very good songs here. They just aren''t played with any soul. Ritchie does shine on several tracks however, coming close to some of his best work. Spanish Archer is absolutely vicious as he plays like a monster to a smashing finale. Strange Ways also features some amazing guitar pyrotechnics. Jon is notable in his absence. Much like Come Taste The Band, he takes up a support role on most of the album. The eclectic mix of styles and lack of the Purple power helped cause the negative response to this album. Probably the weakest DP release since the 1st two in the 60''s. Jim C.

IMO, this album has more ANGER in it than any previous DP collection. Bad Attitude, Mad Dog, Spanish Archer, Dead or Alive...they all exude feelings of anger like...well, like mad. It sounds like Ritchie wants to destroy his guitar (as if he's never destroyed any before!) on Spanish Archer...and just listen to the lyrics on the above songs. The band was angry at women, life, and probably each other when THESE songs were written...
