Hotel California is a classic 70's album with songs that speak to the heart. The Eagles write songs that have meaning - not just mindless love songs. The Last Resort (my favorite song by the Eagles) is a wonderfully written comment on the sad political state in which we live today - commercialization of everything !
E-MAIL: Veronica@unibo.it
I think it's one of the best album I've ever heard....It's always a great feeling, listening to hystorycal songs like"Hotel California"or "My last resort":
E-MAIL: Biusiuta@unifo.it
All the Eagles members are drug-addicts and it's easy to find out from this incredible and stripped album:I always listen to "Hotel California",when I'm smoking a joint!!!
E-MAIL: gatti@pop.sheridanc.on.ca
Simply one the best albums of the seventies. All songs are classics. "The Last Resort" is a lesson to be learned.
E-MAIL: rshayne@wetv.net
When I checked this page originally, it listed the album rating a "7.6". ARE YOU PEOPLE NUTS? By far the best recording from the band. From the opening strings of "Hotel Calfornia" to the closing of "The Last Resort", this is an album that just flows together. It's best listened to in one sitting with the lights dim or on the open road with the stereo loud. "Wasted Time" is Don Henley's finest work. "Pretty Maids All In A Row" is Joe Walsh's best and "New Kid In Town" is Glenn Frey's best. Only Randy Meisners' "Take It To The Limit" is better than "Try And Love Again" (but not by much).
E-MAIL: FluffyQ@Hotmail.com
8.2?? WHAT SORT OF BILGE IS THIS?? ANY ALBUM WITH "THE LAST RESORT" ON IT SHOULD RATE AT LEAST A 9, EVEN IF ALL THE OTHER SONGS ARE PHIL COLLINS COVERS! IT'S THE BEST EPIC SONG EVER WRITTEN IN THIS WORLD!
E-MAIL: smit0427@metnet.edu
i have heard that the line in the lyrics of "hotel california" where he says "They stab it with their steely knives" he is reffering to the band "Steely Dan" is this true?
The Eagles 5th and most well-known studio Album.Includes their most famous Hit, "Hotel California", alsoone of the most popular rock songs of all time. Also includes (in my opinion) one of their most beautifulsongs, "The Last Resort". An outstanding album, anda must for any rock-n-roll fan
gareth.holohan@ntlworld.com
i have been told that the lyrics of hotel california refer to a desert hotel which was home to a cult of Devil worshipers and that the song is a true tale based on the hotel. Can anybody shed some light on this please?
graydrjr@yahoo.com
In reference to who sings the lyrics on Hotel it is done henely, with backup done by done felder and glen frye.
Pitcairn21@yahoo.com
This album is fucking satanic! And the Eagles themselves know it. That's why Bernie Leadon quit the band before they made it, and that's why Randie Meisner quit the band after they made it, cause' he wasn't satanic in the first place and Take the Devil as well as Tring proves it
nick5555_99@yahoo.com
OK - I would love to find an interview where the authors of "Hotel California" 's lyrics told just what it all means! "warm smell of colitas" - that is the small buds on a marijuana plant (colitas, a Spanish word, means "little buds"). "Mirrors on the ceilings" - is this a sexual reference? That is, mirrors on the ceiling to be able to view one's lover from a different perspective? One time my high school teacher said "I know what mirrors on the ceilings means!," when someone was snickering about that - is that what it means. "Pink champagne on ice" - ??? "The Captain" - ??? "just can't kill the beast" - if this is a Satanic cult in a Spanish mission ("mission bell"), they must be trying to kill an animal of some kind with their "steely knives." I would love a URL or explanation from somebody, anybody who knows what these lyrics mean or how I could find out. "prisoners here of our own device" - that would fit in with this Satanic cult theory. "You can never leave" fits too.

One of the things that has seldom been said is that Hotel California doesn't sound anything like anyother eagle song. That is because the music was taken from a song that was titled "Basement Blues" that was recorded on a demo of 4 songs in a studio near Palm Springs in 1974. The studio recording gear was stolen with the master tape and pawned in Indio for herion in that year. All this is coming forward and the recent actions of Don Henley are predictable. There are a number of other Eagles songs that have copyright problems also, check out the ASCAP website for more details.
kpaedrickw@hotmail.com
I had always heard that the Hotel California was the Camarillo State mental hospital in Camarillo, California. Some people equate "checking out" with dying, but "checking out" also referred to getting your meds and getting that fuzzy feeling going on. The beast they cannot kill is the mental problems that they are having. etc... It makes more sense than thinking that it is about some bizarre devil cult.

Yeah, when he knows he should, how nice it was delicious, he puts it in a vet he fixes it for his son which he gives away. its not bullshit as i hav herdit...there r site all over the web that u can listen to it on along with zeppelin etc. and all these ppl saying id love to find an interview with how ever rote the lyrics - well you wont ! as the eagles neva spoke about the lyrics. thats what makes it so mysterious. personally i find the song kinda freaky but still luv it <3 aLn
waly@comcast.net
The Hotel California album cover is a picture of the Camarillo State Mental Hospital bell tower which is now known as California State University Channel Islands as of 2002. I have walked through the compound, and have listened to the lyrics of the song, and it seems that it matches to the "T". So my overwelming belief is that this song is about a mental instatution.
thepotx@yahoo.com
I have just finished combing the web looking for the answer. It seems that this is truly a mystery.I checked out pictures of the Camarillo State Mental Hospital/Currently University and find that although they are similar, it is my beleif that it is not the same tower. I wish that it was because I love this explanation the best.

I'm only 16 years old and I listen to all type of music. But when i herd the song Hotel California, i just wanted to listen to it over and over again. I haven't heard all of their albums, but i think this one is the better album of the Eales. This album should have a 9 as a rating.
anjelic_16@yahoo.com
whoever said that hotel california was sung by another band. BUT it was a remake of the exact song not a different song. The Gipsy Kings did a version of the song a few years back. It was on the soundtrack for the movie "The Big Lebowski" and I'm sure it was also on one of their original CDs as well. -Kelly

I think Hotel California is an intriguing song due to to symbolism and imagery, and haunting overtones. I don't think the song is about satanism, i found a site that talks about something that Don Henley said about the song. How it is about corruption during their stardom, and loss of innocence. How all the "money, drugs, beautiful women, and fame got their attention and made them realize what comes with fame and fortune... They could be wrong, but it's worth a look

P.S. I didn't pick my email address, it was given to me by school

I'm currently enrolled at the new California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI). The campus is on the grounds of the former Camarillo State Hospital, a mental institution since 1937. It is a widly held belief that the hospital was, in part, the inspiration for the song "Hotel California". The bell tower at CSUCI is in fact NOT the tower on the cover of the albulm, but it is very simular. I have heard the tower on the cover is actualy part of the Beverly Hills Hotel. The song is about insanity and the excesses of "success". This fits nicely with the Beverly Hills/Camarillo conection. Also, the windows of the buildings have a very distinct look. They are made up of Several small square panes of glass set into iron frames. The frames are painted an odd shade of red-pink that is rumored to be called "pink champaigne", hence the line in the song, "pink champaigne on ice". The hospital was around for over 60 years and was very well known, especialy around southern California, and especialy among musicians. Jazz legend Charlie "Bird" Parker stayed there after a mental collapse do to in large part to his addiction to heroin. He wrote a song about his experience called "Relaxin' at Camarillo", and even formed a band at the the hospital with some of his fellow patients. I've lived in the area my whole life and since the albulm was released it was always assumed that "Hotel California" was inspired by Camarillo State Hospital. This certainly sounds more likely than the silly "satanist" explanation. I would be very intrested in any other info any of you may have about "Hotel California". obviously there is a lot of roumors and myth going around.

I was told by my wife a few minutes ago that my pasture said that the Eagles openly admitted to being Satan worshipers. I don't know the truth about this but I know if he said it he must know something because he used to be a very big Eagles fan. Have you all heard the same? Out!
bobs_your_uncle_11@hotmail.com
ok ok for all you people wondering on what "hotel California" is about, then here is the truth, hotel california was written about how you could get lured on drugs in the 70's and you could basically never get out, although glenn frey claims the song to be about "nothing", it still has a meaning of what the eagles saw and went through at some stages in their life, to all the people who think this song is santanic or it says things when played backwards well your wrong, it is an offence to the eagles to say that their song has been written to play things backwards, if you have any further problems/ questions email me at: bobs_your_uncle_11@hotmail.com thankyou

BEWARE!!!!Hotel California is no doubt satanic!!!! The song when played backwards has satanic lyrics. I used to like this song but not anymore. DON'T LET THE DEVIL DECEIVE YOU!!!!

I love this song and I have heard a lot of rumors about the song. Because of these rumors I did a lot of studying on the song itself. First of all there is no doubt in my mind that the actual place they had in mind was the University of Channel Islands that used to be an insane asylum. I know this becuase I live fight up the road from the university. It is a very enticing place and has a very sweet architectural design. The interesting thing is, the people they were referring to were not the maniacs that previously lived there. Instead the whole song is about materialism. How one person can value their own possesions over their own lives. The hotel offers everything they want but they can never leave. In that way the are prisoners of their own device. And they can always check-in but never check-out. As for colitas, it actually translates to little blossoms, not just marijuana. How they continuously cut the beast but it never dies, that symbolizes their failed attempts to escape the hotel and materialism. The girl that the main character meets is apparently what he wants from the hotel and all of her male friends is what she wants. How he wants some wine, but the captain says there hasn't been the spirirt there for awhile. That simply means that because of the materialism that is going on the people experience lithlessness and depression. The mirrors on the cieling is an old carnival attraction that causes mental confusion. And the pink chamagne on ice is the color of some of the windows in the University of the Channel Islands. He runs for the door because he suddenly realizes what is going. Anyway thats what I have found out through e-mails rumors and what the Eagles have actually said.

did gypsy kings write a spanish version of hotel california?
eviabo@hotmail.com
On the inside of the album cover Hotel California is a picture of some sort of party and in the room you can see 3 arch like windows. Looking down from one of them is the face of Anton LaVey, the founder of the Church of Satan and author of the Satanic Bible. In general, Rock and Roll has alot to do with the Satanic religion and a large number of songs and lyrics refer to it, so you shouldnt be surprised. Most of the rock artists, you will find, have something to do with the illuminati or the likes. For those of you who dont know who/what that is.... Look on your one dollar bill and you will see a pyramid with an eye at the top of it which has its origins in eygpt script meaning 'Creator'. Why is this on a dollar bill you ask? Because they, the illuminati, are basicly running the country and the world. Feel free to look it up if you wish and you may find lots of people who secretly are apart of this organisation.. not just the eagles. The organisation also goes under the name of the 'masonites' and 'Jesuit Priests' originating from the Roman Catholic Church. Ever wondered why the catholic get their own country 'The Vatican'? Also you will see the satanic church registered as 'Hotel California'. Feel free to look all this up and confirm my mad Conspiracies linking the Eagles to the illuminati.

There is actually a Hotel California that is a place of satanic worship. Can anyone please tell me where i can find out more about it on the net? Thanks!

The hotly debated location of Hotel California will never truly be known. Although, I agree with most that is it Cal State Channel Islands (previously Camarillo State Mental Hospital. My boyfriend goes to college there and we just took a bunch of friend there yesterday to have a scare-fest (the well scene from The Ring was also filmed there, so we took them up to the well). He took us to the Hotel California which greatly resembled an old, dated hotel...it was reputedly where the patient's families stayed when they visited...If you're quiet enough, you get in and actually go inside...Bring your bravery along, you'll need it...

Hey I was wondering where can I find and listen these 'songs'? please reply in this guestbook, Sincerely John
One of the greatest albums ever made. Don't try to bring Satan or insane bell towers (or whatever) into the picture. By the way, the front cover is only a picture of The Beverly Hills Hotel!! You could probably play "Mary had a little lamb" backwards and find something someone could call satanic in it if you listen hard enough. Furthermore, all members of The Eagles have contributed greatly to society outside of their extrodinary musical talents. They're fine men in my book, and their lifestyles show me no evidence that they would be obsessed with something as evil WORSHIPING SATAN!!

baboo44@juno.com
I just came back from Laguna Beach CA, there is a rehab center there, Spencer Recovery, I was told this was the original Hotel California. Of course while in, I looked around to see any resemblence to the album cover. I'd appreciate any comments.
baboo44@juno.com
I guess I should add as well, this was an old hotel, across the street from the ocean. Chris Spencer, the founder of Spencer Recovery purchased it and turned it into a rehab for drugs and alcohol. I also heard this is where Mel Gibson went for his alcohol recovery. The locals of Laguna would know the story. I did ask if this was the Hotel in the song and was told yes. A little weird, as rumor has it that the Hotel in the song was used as a church for Satanism. And if in fact, this is the one, that it is now used for helping people, and Mel Gibson - Passion of Christ, perhaps deeper thought, that good over comes evil...makes you think.

the gypsy kings DID do a rendition of hotel california. It's on the "big Lebowski" soundtrack

oh yeah i forgot to add... if you play the song backwards... satans message is loud and clear.
SassySweetHart64@aol.com
I grew up in California listening to the Eagles. The song "Hotel California" is about several different things. Yes, I still have the album and if you play it backwards, it talks about satan worship. The entire song is a metaphore about different experiences each of them went thru and about experiences other people have been thru in their own lives. At the beginning of the song he's on a dark desert highway, which means that is where his state of mind is at the time. The cool wind in his hair is soothing while the warm smell of colitis comes up thru the air. (Colitis is spanish for "little buds", meaning Marijuana). Something begins to entice him and he tries to ignore it at first but the final enticement is a "shimmering light" and he gives up and "stops for the night". Again, meaning he needs refuge for awhile. "She", which is the enticement for him shows him "the way". Welcome to the Hotel California, such a lovely place, Plenty of room at the Hotel California". He was accepted by all of them no matter what he was feeling. He called up the captain to bring him his wine and was told they hadn't had that spirit there since 1969; meaning he was looking back and reflecting on his care-free days. Mirros on the ceiling, pink champaigne on ice (think about what pink champaigne on ice is) and she said "we are only prisoners here of our own device, which translates into getting into something so heavy that he doesn't know if he can ever get out. In the masters chambers they gathered for the feast, they stab it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast; which translates into the satanic ritual and the drugs. The next thing he remembers is running for the door to find the passage back to where he was before. Relax says the night man, we are programmed to receive, which is a metaphore for being brainwashed by the drugs and the satanism. You can check out anytime you like but you can never leave translates into "you can run away whenever you want but eventually, you'll keep coming back because we'll taunt you and it will haunt you. This song is about Satanism, Drugs and sex. Those things were so prevalant in the early 70's. Anyone could find refuge with a group like this and they were on every street corner. .. but once they got in, ...just like the song says; "you can check out anytime you like but you can never leave".
jojobean39@hotmail.com
You are all saying that if you play the song backwards you hear a Satanic message. I am curious to know how you guys are playing this song backwards. That is not an easy thing to do, insofar as it requires very expensive equipment. Anyone who says they are playing it backwards and listening to it is full of crap in my opinion. Prove me wrong guys.
dark_vamp88@yahoo.com
First of all its only a song so chill out. I have a solution that works for everyone: The song is about a Santanic cult that was in a mental hospital(which is now a school). Everyone in the cult was on drugs which is why the Eagles did the song because they could relate to it, because they coulnt get out either. And if you play the record backwards in a rocketship half way to the moon and stand on your head you'll hear a satanic message. The santanic message is that god sucks ass, you are an idiot, and you should listen to this record forward 100 times to honor his greatness: SANTAN! have fun kiddies
milady_fair@hotmail.com
I've been listening to the Eagles and rock and roll since the early seventies. Hotel California has stood the test of time and I believe to be the greatest album ever produced - period. It's not about Satan worship or cocaine addiction, although who didn't use coke in the 70's? Go to the Urban Legends website and you see all the myths debunked and Don Henley's comment on the meaning which is very obvious, especially if you know Don Henley and his take on life. He's a cynic and sometimes gets very disillusioned with the American dream. A good portion of his music carries that underlying theme. I never did figure out how fanatics played all those albums backwards and actually got a message out of it!
rtroke444@hotmail.com
alrite, the song is all about drug addiction.in the late 60's and early 70s, the west coast of north america was the world of free thinking. And california was the capitol of this world. there are so many referneces to heroine addiction. "Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim I had to stop for the night" this point in the song is the first time he does the drug. "This could be heaven or This ould be hell" is a refernece to the high and how it could be the best thing in the world or the worst thing in the world. Next indication, "There were voices down the corridor, I thought I heard them say welcome to the Hotel California Such a lovely place, such a lovely face Plenty of room at the Hotel California Any time of year (any time of year) you can find it here". The voices are in his heads and engraving the addicion into his mind. therews plenty of room for other drug users in this place, and , any time of year, u can find the drug in claifornia. And finally, the best indication of the drug addiciton is "And in the master's chambers, they gathered for the feast They stab it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast" the steely knives are needle and the beast is the addiction itself. A teacher of mine when i was in grade 10 taught us this and it makes totla sense. i dont no where all this satanic shit came from

You said it can be played backwards using "many softwares." I would like the name of these "softwares" and how readly available they are to the average consumer.

Oh yeah, REAL expensive equipment to play a record backwards. It's called a TURNTABLE! Maybe you've heard of that crazy invention that you play RECORDS on. You know, vinyl, wax, liqorice pizza? All you do is put the lp on the turntable and use your finger to play the record backwards. The one trick is it can't be an automatic player. It must be a manual. Just turn on the receiver and presto!
jeftheman@hotmail.com
I dont have a record player in front of me, but I can assure you that just pushing the record backwards would not work. While that may play it backwards, it would be extremely hard to get a decent, fluid speed. Your sound quality would be shitty at best. So, once again, as the guy stated earlier, if it is so easy to be done, why cant anyone offer a GOOD solution on how to do it?
Hey, don't get all bent out of shape. It's actually quite effective to play a record backwards on a turntable. Now an 8 track or a cassette...THAT would be challenging. I've played lots of records backwards. Beatles (Strawberry Fields forever backwards on the line "it doesn't matter much to me" says John Lennon is, uh, dead", Motley Crue,BOC, Zeppelin. You just need a steady hand.

I worked at Camarillo State Hospital when 'Hotel California' was released. There were a lot of rumours from the start that the song was about the hospital. References to places and events similar to those at CSH are all over the song. We had courtyard dances. There were 'night men' who admitted parients who could check in but sometimes never leave.Threre are a lot more. It's a great story but we never had any concrete proof that CSH was the subject. The photo on the jacket is similar but not the CSH bell tower. Anyone interested can see photos of the hospital at my website: www.cshemployees.com I'm not selling anything so don't worry. alan

texasmade77@yahoo.com
ok when i hear that to me it sounds like a mental institution i persoanlly am a born again christian and songwriter. music is an art its a way of expression some people like myself write songs that mean absolutely nothing the its worded and in harmony is awesome sounding some people will interpret it differently cause like i said its art if you look at a painting from picaso we all see different images in it but when the artist drew it his intent wasn't for it to be anything specific thats the with music but music you hear and paintings you see.its prespective
Well I'm in high school so I wasn't around when all this hype about satanic references came up. My mom and I had a lengthy conversation about the symbolism in this song one day while driving. She had some interesting interpretations of some lines and I was wondering if anyone agrees with us. This song IS about a mental institution. It has nothing to do with satan and the only reason that it references colitas is to show that the society of that time was filled with drugs and depression. Anyway, the lyrics near the end of the song we believe is talking about a surgical room. Examples: mirrors on the ceiling = lights and mirrors commonly found in surgery; pink champagne on ice = anesthesia (i don't really get this but my mom insists that its right). When they talk about the master's chambers, its the surgery room and they "stab it with their steely knives But they just can't kill the beast" meaning that medical research has not been able to cure mental diseases. "Last thing I remember I was running for the door I had to find the passage back To the place I was before." This talks about the person coming close to death during surgery and seeing the door to heaven but when they recovered and woke up they were back in the institution. As for the last line, "You can check out any time you like But you can never leave" means basically that you can die by checking out, otherwise your stuck in the institution. Anyway, I was bored here in class one day, so here's my interpretation.
Unlisted
I personally don't give a fuck what the song is about, satanism or not... it's a damn good song.
I have worked for an agency located on the Camarillo State Hospital grounds, now Channel Islands University, for the last 25 years. Legend has it that one of the bandmembers sisters was a patient at Camarillo State; after a visit with the sister, they produced the Hotel California.

i was always told that the song was about the first satinic church dubed hotel california by the followers but out of all my resureach i have to say that this site presents the evidence in the best way for its case and it looks into the background behind the myths that alread exist if anyone can give me hard evidnce to any of the other theories in being correct i would greatly appriecate it. also i heard that all songs played backwords have a bad message so i hold little confidence on that theory http://www.snopes.com/music/songs/hotel.htm

I originally commented that the song had some sort of roots in the way the Eagles must have somehow (perhaps unintentionally) gotten mixed up in participating in Satanic ritual. But now I think that there really is no answer, except that the band themselves know the answer. It could be about drugs, it could be about an insane asylum, and it (probably less likely, but nonetheless still interestingly) could be about Satanism. Not to say what percentage chance there is of each being true. I'm just saying I admit that I don't know what this song is about. I do know, however, that it is a very good song with good drums and an excellent guitar solo. --Nick

I think the guys from the Eagles just came up with some really catchy lyrics one night and said to one another" hey! let's write some cool music for it, call it,uhmm,"hotel california", and see if it sells". if a person looks long enough and hard enough they'll find all manner of hidden signs and meanings. just enjoy the song for the cool, classic tune it has become.

You can find the Hotel California about one hours drive North of Cabo San Lucus in a town called Todos Sontos. What's the big deal. This is the place that things really happened at the time the song was written. Check it out.
