THIS IS THE WORST ALBUM HE HAS MADE. WHO WANTS TO HEAR MAYNARD PLAYING SOFTLY AND RESERVED? DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DON'T BUY IT.

Rubbish. This album just shows again how Maynard is this century's greates trumpeters. He can scream and he can play nice too.

""Humph4 is right. That is the trademark of a great Trumpeter, being versital."

You're crazy. Maynard is the best trumpet to ever live, whether he's reserved or playing double "C's." I think his reservation proves that he is comfortable with his immense success and doesn't have to try and impress everyone with his untouchable range. He can concentrate on making music in the style his chooses. He's been at it for half a century, I think he can play soft if he wants to.

I just picked up this CD on 7/28/96 - and the catalog number is 512918L. It's also titled "Six By Six" on Mainstream and the cuts are exactly the same. In fact in the liner notes from Leonard Feather from 1990 he mentions "Magnitude" as the name of the CD. I also have "Six By Six" on LP and the last three cuts are NOT ON IT!!?? Anyway, it's a great CD - and if you think MF doesn't play high-notes, just check out "SUMMERTIME." It's worth the price of the whole CD !!

Many so-called MF fans are guilty of the same thing as those critics who refuse to acknowledge MFs huge talent by dismissing him as nothing but a screamer. Most of his More musical" efforts are sprinkled around his many albums. Here is a concentration of them. What's the problem?

I feel this is a major change for Maynard. You have to remember that during this time he was going through financial troubles and could not afford to keep the big band he was accustomed to having. This small sextet was a way for him to play great music and keep his pocket book safe. In this album it wouldn't make sense to blow the roof off with a small group. When he is with a big band it is natural for him to wail upbove the ensemble. Listen to this album for what it is. An intimate small sextet playing great music.

THis IS a great MF album. It shows that Maynard could hang with Miles and Freddy as far as bebop improve goes!!! Beside, the Boss is KILLER on SUMMERTIME!!!
Here you can hear Maynard play (softly).
