This album should be considered classic Ferguson. There is not a weak spot on this whole album. Gospel John is legendary!
E-MAIL: ghayers@tamu.edu
Certainly a "must have" for Ferguson fans, as well as an excellent choice for someone wanting to know more about this amazing artist.

This is certainly Maynard's best. Classic Ferguson. Check out Randy Purcell on The Way We Were. FYI Randy is still playing big band music. He has relocated to Pittsburgh and plays regularly in the balcony big band. His nick in the burgh is The Captain. (or occaisionally when he's drunk it is Landar from outer space.

I agree with all the other comments of the album. This is classic and legendary Maynard. When I bought this album I was hooked on the Canadian superstar!!
E-MAIL: garin@andrew.cmu.edu
Without a doubt the BEST maynard album. there is not one weak spot on any of the tracks. the ensemble in Gospel John and Randy Purcell's mastery on The Way We Were are personal favorites. (Go Landar!!)

Can anyone tell which album "Spirit of st frederick" is on? Played it, can`t find the man himself doing it!
E-MAIL: Doug.Dozier@chrysalis.org
My favorite of all his albums. Thank God for CD's, I wore out 3 tapes rewinding that trio in La Fiesta...

This is my one and only Maynard Ferguson. It is great although it is not actually a purists album. This album is excelent for introducing someone to jazz.
E-MAIL: bharris@cyberus.ca
I love to turn up the sterio to heavy metal volume and groove to this album!!!

One of Fergusons best albums!!

I never get tired of hearing Chameleon! This is Maynard at his best!
E-MAIL: dhuber@scifi/deus
I never get tired of listening to Chameleon! The Spirit of St. Frederick chart is on the "It's My Time" album.

I agree, after being introduced to Maynard in HS playing lead trumpet, I fell in love with this album! It's truly a must have, Maynard's power comes through loud and clear. BTW, where can I get "It's My Time"?? I'm told it's not in circulation. :(

I can't get over how well "Livin' For The City" grooves. I can listen to that song over and over again. I am the current band director of the 55th annual EBC Hit Parade on the campus of Valley City State University in Valley City, ND. For the past 25 to 30 years, we have closed our show with a Maynard chart. Last year we did Gospel John (which kicked serious butt!) and others just to name are the following: Gabriel, Country Road, Hey Jude, and MacArthur Park just to name a few. Maynard is a legend in every aspect of his music!

This is perhaps one of Maynard's best cuts. His playing on the Chameleon and Gospel John tracks should be considered vintage Maynard solo work.

Well.... I saw all the comments and thought I'd add mine. Maynard's the Man!

Don't forget to check out Maynard's Superbone and Baritone Horn Skills. Some nifty Stratoshere work on trumpet too!

Great album, the baritone work on "Superbone" is incredible and all players sound pretty "hot" to me. Does anybody out there have any information about old Maynard albums? Question - Why has Columbia not put more of his work out on CD!!! Anyway, great trumpet range and technique on the boss here, but his tone sounds different then on other 70's work - almost a "tin" type sound. But it does not matter because he soars higher than anyone else and that is all that counts

This is the album that got me started 5:30 threw La Fiesta, and I going crazy Are all three Maynard? wasn't sure I Can't Get Started, Maynard Sings! Turn this album up and put in on repeat.

Hey Adam, check out the new release Maynard Ferguson on Verve Jazz Masters lots of old stuff

Great Album! LA FIESTA RULES!!!

This is album is my inspiration!!! Maynard!!!!!!!!!!!Thanks for this one.........
E-MAIL: mr_olson@provis.com
This is a great album. The charts are fantastic. The only criticism I have is that his tone when playing the superbone and baritone are not of to snuff with the type of tone that Purcell is getting. I don't know if that is the fault of the superbone (supposedly a stuffy horn) or the fact that he is a trumpet player playing on a larger horn and mouthpiece???
E-MAIL: efritch@cannet.com
A must have for any Maynard fan.....and any trumpet fan for that matter. I was able to see him three times during this period, and thinking of those shows still gives me chills. Don't have it? Go get it!
E-MAIL: schultz@mwt.net
Hey Adam - also the "Essence of Maynard Ferguson" from Columbia is another small sample from this label. It's out now on CD (that is if you don't have it already!) Plus - Stan Mark is one heck of a lead player...does anyone know where he is these days ???
E-MAIL: T2sonn @aol.com
One of his best...My favorite is "I can't get started" (also have the original Bunny Berigan vesion). Recently I chated with Stan Mark's wife on AOL...just entered search for maynard ferguson (on AOL) and her name came up. After chatting awhile she informed me she was married to Stan Mark. Too Cool..very nice Lady....Stan wasn't home...Also other Trumpeters from MF's band on AOL. Check it out...you might catch one online. Long Live MF

Killer big band sound! Adding a big band to fusion rock a'la Chameleon is excellent. Gospel John is still one of my faves!
E-MAIL: Trick@sprynet.com
Definate album to get if you can! Great SCREECH SOLO! Maynard is unbeatable and proves it again with this album
E-MAIL: alanr@mindspring.com
Chameleon was the definitive Maynard album of the 70's. Very accessible for the jazz-illiterate. Not his best jazz artistic work however.
E-MAIL: BFG9000d@aol.com
Maynard Ferguson in this album shows eveyrbody that he is the best trumpeter check out La Fiesta I must have rewind that song so much that my tape deck and my tape burned up now I bought a cd and the sound quality is 10 times better. Trust me get the cd probably one of the best albums that Maynard did on the fact of just having him play high notes through out the hole song and never wearing out if you are a high note addict like me get this album it is worth every penny.
E-MAIL: fireshaker@snet.net
I am looking for a complete listing of every CD out there with Maynard Ferguson on it. If you know some i would greatly appreciate it if you sent the album name. If you know where you can purchase it, that would be great to include too. thanks MF fans!

SUPERBONE MEETS THE BADMAN KICKS (_|_)!!!!!! what a great idea for a horn, a trombone with both a slide and valves
E-MAIL: brishaw@hotmail.com
This album rocks, but his best work is before and after the funk-rock era. This music is a lot simpler than some of his old and new arrangements, and if you're looking for straight-ahead swing look elsewhere, but overall good CD.
E-MAIL: larbar@compuserve.com
This album is without a doubt the contains the best of what the M.F. sound stood for, or probably ever will stand for. It was a true quality mix of the big band jazz sound creativlly arranged for the pop music of the time.
E-MAIL: bigband@phoenix96.freeserve.co.uk
Absolutely cracking album!! even my wife likes it especially Gospel John...question can anyone tell me where I can buy the sheet(full big band score)music for Gospel John from!! I'm a lead trumpet player over here in good old blighty, I've played many of Maynards charts and have also had the great pleasure in playing with Allen Vizutti recently (trumpet on hollywood album) last question has anyone got a copy of the 'hollywood' album ? I'm desperatly after it (I remember listining to it when I was 15yrs old) lost my copy because I was rather 'wet' behind the ears then!!! Cheers MARK (Long live MAYNARD!!!!!!!!!!)
