You have to intently listen just to barely hear Maynard play. The microphone must have been placed in a box somewhere. From what I can hear of Maynard, he sounds like he is having a bad performance. The band is rather sloppy too. This is the period where Maynard shot his lips. Luckily he came back in the 70''s and found a new sound that knocked everybody''s socks off!
