Comments for Ferguson, Maynard, MF Horn 4 & 5 - Live At Jimmy's

E-MAIL: schultz@mwt.net
Maynard really wails on this LP - hopefully we'll all be around when it comes out on CD !!! Anyway, I think this version of Mac Park is Maynard's best - the band even gets off beat at the end of the drum solo - but Pete Jackson on piano bails them out. Teonova is excellent - and Lyn Biviano on lead trumpet is GREAT. I saw this one for sale on the INTERNET - it's expensive (around $35-$45) but it sure is worth it !!

This album is the best of Maynard's "MF Horn" series. The band is up and hot. The small audience is wildly enthusiastic and the band responds with a stellar performance. This album contains MF's best version of MacArthur Park. The Fox Hunt has some of the hottest, tightest trumpet playing you'll ever hear, and Bruce Johnstone's baritone sax solo on "Got the Spirit" is nothing short of incredible. This album is great! Now, if only Columbia would get off it's dead behind and release this on CD!!

I never owned this album, but borrowed the double LP from a friend. This album really kicks! Several Maynard standards from MF Horn i & II are played on the album, but with a different feel. The live audience pushes the musicians into a frenzy, producing the sound of a band playing for the fun of playing great music. So,,,,WHY is this album not available on CD?

I think the best band MF put together. The album also captures the "real" live sound that was an MF concert in the 70's. MacArthur Park is really an inspiring experience and motivated me and other horn players at the time. I agree: CD would be GREAT (come on, Columbia!) I loaned it to a young trumpet player and he was astounded, not just with MF but the ensemble playing as well. Its neat to see MF still inspiring young players!!

I would like to say that this is great listening. However, NOTHING beats M.F. Horn 1 & 2. On this double L.P. , the lead player is out of tune on many tracks. Also, this version of MacArthur Park is NOT the best. Ever heard the one from M.F. Horn 1 & 2? I must admit though, the first time I heard Got The Spirit, I was moved. Any obsesser of high-note trumpet playing will enjoy this, but it is not the best thing Maynard has put out.

I'd really like to find Live at Jimmy's on cassette, and most definitely on CD if that ever happens. If anyone knows how to find this please let me Know. I cherish this recording since it inspired me to play Jazz saxophone during my school days and I just simply wore out my original tape listening to "Nice N Juicy" and "MacArthur Park".

The most energized recording of the 70s. Along with "Chameleon", a Ferguson classic. This would have no problem selling as a CD reissue. They did "Conquistador" and "Chameleon" what happened with "Live at Jimmy's" ????

Live @ Jimmy''s is great!!! My favorite song is Teonova. My favorite MF Horn album is MF Horn 1 though. Check it out if you have not yet!!

Looking to purchase this album, got any idea where, on the net. Use to have it on vinyl. Maybe this one too Woddy Hermans Live at Carnegie Hall 30th Anniversary Concert. Both very hard to find./ thanks
I bought this album in 1974. I was a Jazz Baritone Sax Player and played my way around the world. I all the years since I still think this is one of the great jazz recordings of all time. The most recent news I have is that it has never been released on CD. It should be. Bruce Johnston and Ferdinand Povel do some work here that should be heard by all.

I agree with the majority of you that this album needs to be on CD. This is the most memorable version of "MacArthur Park" out, and it is a shame to let it fall into oblivion.

I started playing trumpet 1963 and started following Maynard 1968. This double album at Jimmy's to me is the best of all. Have seen him in person about 6 times. Am afraid to play this album anymore as I almost wore it out 20 years ago. Hope the CD comes out soon.

The Best!!! This is the first album of MF I ever heard. My dad picked up a radio station promotional copy from somewhere. Coincidently, MF was hot with all my high school jazz band buddies. I fear I may never see this on CD. Thank god for MP3's via p2p networks. Screw the RIAA!!!!

I was in the audience every night at Jimmy's. They played there for several nights. I had a front row seat every night. It was without a doubt the most memorable experience--almost as good as his Town Hall 1972 welcome back concert when he came back from his soul searching in India or wherever it was. The band was all British with Pete Jackson, Dave Lynane and Randy Jones in the rhythm section. The concert started very late so that NY players could attend. I was 18. Don Ellis was in the audience and I met him during intermission. What a time!!!.

this is to me the best album ever recorded by m.f. the audience was made up of columbia record executives. The live audience and the band are red hot. These execs ate it up. The sax solo of macarthur park alone make a better version than the first. also maynard sounds very relaxed and flowing vs. the original choppier version. Must have the cd but i have read that sony now owns the rights and refuses to market on cd. They don't beleive it would sell enough copies. There is/was a campaign started by fans to re-issue maynards albums to cd. they feel that maynard was at thte height of his powers when he was in his forties, and i agree. come on sony!
