Comments for Ferguson, Maynard, Kenton In Hi-Fi

Maynard also does a great job on "Artistry in Boogie," and drives the six-man trumpet section just as powerfully as ever for Kenton. The album is also interesting because the personnel is mostly the same as on Kenton's "Contemporary Concepts"--i.e., the relatively "cool" band playing mostly Bill Holman arrangements. With the addition of several soloists from earlier versions of the Kenton band--Vido Musson on tenor, Milt Bernhart on trombone--the band sounds anyting but cool, and much of that is due to Maynard's lead work.

An absolutely amazing Kenton album! Probably the best band kenton had until Live at Brigham Young University in the 1970''s. And of course Maynard is absolutely amazing, leading an awesome trumpet section. Maynard has an excellent solo on Concerto to end all Concertos.
Recorded in Hollywood, February, 1956. I`m surprised this album was such a late entry on this list. "Concerto to End All Concertos" is one of the strongest big band solos I have ever heard. It almost ranks up there with the "Trumpets On High" album, which every MF fan should own.
