Comments for Ferguson, Maynard, Kenton: Summer of '51

E-MAIL: elmhurst@webtv.net
This broadcast was sent to servicemen in Korea, I HEARD it at the time. I loved Maynard"s trumpet solo at the end of intermission rift. Very exciting.Maynard had quite A FEW UPPER REGISTER solos in this album including the opener Machito. He never sounded better, his youthful excuberance and presence made this Kenton band one of his best.Maynard supplied the fire, and the flames of great players erupted. The time element is perhaps the biggest handicap of this album, as most pieces were held within the 3 or 4 minute range.Nevertheless quality is to be preferred over quantity.
These songs were selected from the CBS radio broadcasts of the Kenton band during there 6 week booking at the Hollywood Palladium.
