Comments for Grateful Dead, Dick's Picks Volume 6 (3 discs)

The first set here is below average, with some sloppy moments. The second set is strong, the "Spanish jam" being the highlight. The "Scarlet->Fire" is good also. This would have been better as a two-disc set, omitting the first set.

See, this is what happens when Dick and Company cave into the obnoxious requests of Heads who insist on complete shows. Let's face it... there are really very few shows that are CD-release quality from start to finish. Yes, I'm sure we can all rattle off 10 to 20 of them, me included. Now, if Dick would stick to the 'best of run' concept, or the 'show highlights' approach, we can be guaranteed '10' quality from beginning to end. Perhaps Dick put this entire show out to prove a point to this obnoxious contingent in Dead Land. It is indeed possible. (I'm just surprised that Disc #1 got past Phil's scrutiny.)

Day Job is awful, and it''s painful to hear Jerry flounder his way through Alabama Getaway, but in between there''s the excellent and moving Althea...and the Scarlet/Fire/Estimated/Eyes on side 2 are all great, as is Spanish Jam on disc 3.
Complete concert from Hartford, CT -- 10/14/83. Thisrelease is a little questionable since many 1980`s showsare availble on tape and they had much better performancesin 1983 than this one. Disc 2 is tremendous and the onlyhighlight of this set.
