Comments for John, Elton, THE ONE

As a hard-core long-term EJ fan, I have to say I'm ambivalent toward this album. It tends to rely WAAAAY too much on drum machines, ruining what would otherwise be great songs. Some gems shine on through, though, like the title track, which is a classic piano ballad in the great EJ tradition. Definitely a good album, but not a great one.

Elton continues to produce good songs, and this album takes him into the modern era. Combining the latest technology wit hhis trusty piano, he creates a great album of great songs. Noteworthy adds include, "Understanding Women", "Simple Life" and "When She doesn't want You"

I am listening to this one right now. People who hate "The North," where have your minds gone?????!!!!! One of the most beatiful songs. Yeah, I heard it too for the first time and cringed, but I gave it a second chance and it just shows what excellent songwriters Elton and Bernie are. My whole love of the man's work was born in giving "Tiny Dancer" a second chance.

It's one of his best albums. I love drum machines (MUCH better than Nigel Ollson's way of playing drums, anyway!) and Elton used them here in such a wonderful way... Take Understanding Women, for example: it's definitely GREAT... that synthesized drum give it that thrill that often let Elton's songs be called naive and stuff like that. One of my favourite albums!

Hey, "c.crudele@sintel.it".....Nigel knows where you live, and is coming over to 'drum machine'-gun your a**!!! Drum machines are for '80's wimps, and even though The One is indeed a fine album and the start of Elton's 1990s comeback, it certainly would have sounded a lot more emotional if it weren't for that goddamn drum machine! So wise up and give Nigel his due and an apology!!!!

Drum machines aren''t for wimps. Synthesizers are. So is plastic pop, vapid lyrics and a whole lot of other stuff. BTW, this album only has one good song. "THE ONE" rules!!! It kicks Harmony''s ugly old backside any day. So does "Roy Rogers" where the lyrics at least mean something, unlike this "Hello, today, I know you''re jealous... I love Harmony....bla bla" or whatever he sings on it. That song should''ve been an instrumental!!

The good songs [The One, Simple Life, Sweat It Out, Whitewash County,The Last Song, make up for sub-standard ones like The North. However, this is still an albumof calibre from an artist of enduring distinction.[OUT OF 5] ***
