Comments for John, Elton, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

E-MAIL: u51866@uicvm.uic.edu
One of his best if not one of the best albums to come out of the seventies (or any decade for that matter).
Probably one of the best rock albums ever released, in the top 5 anyway. Definately VINTAGE Elton John.
E-MAIL: rlf10@ccc.amdahl.com
This is my very favorite Elton John album. Funeral for a friend is an awsome piece and Candle In The Wind is really touching. Call me a cruster, but I like it anyway!
E-MAIL: Ecykpfm@ecn1.chemeng.nottingham.ac.uk
Despite such poor tracks as "Dirty Little Girl" and "Jamaican Jerk-off", this remains one of Elton's greatest works, in particular "Funeral For a Friend/ Love Lies Bleeding"
E-MAIL: hda@inforamp.net
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a classic album that has stood the test of time. The band of Nigel Olsson, Davey Johnstone, Dee Murray and Ray Cooper are unmatched to this day. Together, Elton and the band produced a true rock masterpiece with something for everyone. Producer Gus Dudgeon's recording technique is singular and truly incredible. Bernie Taupin's lyrics are as usual, intelligent, thoughtful and take the listener to another plane. This album should be put in the top 50 time capsule of rock.

GYBR is, quite simply, one of the best rock albums ever made. Few artists ever achieve what this album did: 17 classic songs, all with great lyrics and incredible hooks. "Funeral For A Friend" is a great tour de force, and the hooks keep on coming. Witness "Candle IN The Wind," "Bennie And The Jets," "GYBR". And that's just the first four songs! An absolute must for any serious music collector -- Elton fan or not.
E-MAIL: pduncan@david.wheaton.edu
GBYBR is a double album, but there is hardly a dull moment throughout the many tracks. A ton of styles are represented from country to an island sound, but the album centers around the man and his piano.
E-MAIL: cpybmx@chron.com
If you don't like at least one track on this album, you don't like pop or rock music. Period.
E-MAIL: VNCL27A@prodigy.com
Anyone that hasn't heard this album is not an Elton John fan. Definitely one of the top ten albums of all time.
E-MAIL: mojo@istar.ca
Ok, so your stuck on a dessert island and you can only bring one album.....what do you choose?? Duh....GBYBR what else!! Four sides of the best muic ever written and recorded!

Surely the best album of Elton John if not the best album of any artist around. From the haunting start of the album with Funeral for a friend to end of side 4 (when we used to play albums instead of CD's) of Harmony, the listener is taken on a musical journey of sight and sound. Classics such as "This Song Has No Title", "Grey Seal", "I've Seen That Movie Too" and "Ballad of Danny Bailey" are some of the best songs that EJ has ever recorded. And the hits (good ones I might add) are on here too. "Candle in the Wind", "Benny and the Jets", "Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting".

I think that GYBR is simply too long for its own good. Some of the rockers are straight live-concert fare and work better on a stage than in one's room, the way some Rolling Stones tracks usually do. This album came out at the right moment, with a right package and the right lyrical CONTENTS. But although it might seem hard-hearted to say, "Candle in the Wind" wouldn't have stuck out as it did were it not about Marilyn Monroe's tragic life. As a pop song it undoubtedly hits bull's eye, as a musical work it holds no surprises from day one. But who cares? The best track, in this sense, is the lovable "Harmony". Leonardo.

It's hard to believe that this album came out in the seventies, as it has certainly stood the test of time! This has got to be Elton's best album, "Love lies bleeding" is probably THE greatest song of the rock music era! Other classics on this album include "Candle in the wind", "Saturday night's alright for fighting", "Goodbye yellow brick road" and many more. It's been digitally remastered and released on CD recently, so it's a must for everyone's record collection. I wish I could give it 20 out of 10! Ross Mackie, Cambridge
E-MAIL: lytle@galesburg.net
This is a great album! It's available on CD from both MCA and Rocket Records, and the digital remastering on the one from Rocket is much better. I noticed a comment above that said "Jamaica Jerk-off" is a poor song, and coming from a musicain, I'd like to say that it wasn't supposed to be a serious song, but a FUN song to mess around with. Besides it was probably only added when Elton decided to make GBYBR a double album. My favorite song on the album is "Gray Seal", followed closely by "Bennie..." and "Candle In The Wind"

I hate "Funeral For A Friend." one of the most overdramatic things ever written. Most of his other 1970's material is very good.
E-MAIL: griffisr@ptbo.igs.net
What else could the world of music ask for? The best album of the finest songwriters ever to walk this Earth. Four sides of non-stop rock. Even good for ALL ages.
E-MAIL: michaelmurray@wolf-web.com
the song GYBR is a weird one, but in a good. I know that in some way its supposed to be connected with the story line of The Wizard of Oz, but don't know how yet. E-mail me if you know.

one of the great albums of the seventies. though theres a couple of mediocre tunes here everything else is fantastic it hardly matters. gotta go
E-MAIL: michaelcrawley@hotmail.com
o.k i'm back. i just wanted to add that although this album contains four hit singles, there was the potential for so many more . you're sister cant twist and harmony for example.funeral for a friend/love lies bleeding also ranks with the great classic rock tracks of all time . at around $ 14.00 for a seventy-plus minute disc it's something no elton fan should be without(unless you're like my ditsy sister-in-law who bought it and was disappointed that it had the "wrong" version of candle in the wind sheesh)
E-MAIL: rdanzig@entelchile.net
Itīs one of the best albums of Elton, and it contained so many top 40 songs that the rest were a bit unknown to the public, but as excellent as the famous ones. Who ever did a song like Good bye yellow brick road before?so many british singers began imitating his way of singing, tones, cords, etc.
E-MAIL: centra@cebinet.com.br
WHEN THIS ALBUM REALESED, MY FATHER WAS A BOY. TODAY I HAVE 15 YEARS AND THE "GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD" IS THE BEST WORK OF YEARS '70. BIG LIRICS, BIG MUSICS, BIG SUCESS.
E-MAIL: BAXTER@JUNO.COM
THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF CANDLE IN THE WIND IS OKAY BUT IT SOUNDS MUCH BETTER WITH JUST THE PIANO. TWO SONGS ON HERE HAVE CREATED MUCH DEBATE JAMAICA JERKOFF WAS REMOURED TO BE ABOUT MASTURBATION ALL THE GIRLS LOVE ALICE WAS SUPPOSEDLY ABOUT A GIRL WHO BECOMS A LESBIAN
E-MAIL: FluffyQ@hotmail.com
The guy who submitted this album is a creep! I agree that Elton has made a lot of lame songs (check out Greatest Hits volume II, for example) but this album hardly has any. "I've seen that movie", "Candle In The Wind", "Harmony", "Social Disease", "Love lies bleeding" and "Jamaica Jerk- Off" are all good songs in their own way. BTW, 1. The pervert who said 'Love lies bleeding' was overblown should first listen to Meatloaf. Now THAT's overblown. 2. Whaddya mean, Jamaica Jerk-Off is about masturbation? I hate these guys who interpret all songs as if they were Playboy pics. It's a dance song. So many names of dances ('shag', 'jazz') have been twisted into sexual euphemisms that I guess some idiot had to do it here as well. 3. GYBR isn't a wierd song - it's a sort of Prodigal Son story.

I'm hung up on 'Captain Fantastic...'. But this is my second favorite Elton album. Anyone out there like to compare these two albums? Obviously, the more commercial GYBR would win hands-down among the regular rock-listening mainstream audience, but how about among the usual Elton die-hards who have actually heard BOTH albums and know what CFATBDC is about???
E-MAIL: FluffyQ@hotmail.com
Hi there! Well, I haven't really heard "CFATBTD" (it's not available at the wussy record stores over here, so I only heard a few songs from compilations, best-ofs, etc. And since such things can't tell the true worth of an album, I suspend judgement.) BTW, to the pervert who posted those crappy interpretations of "Jamaica Jerkoff", I have one thing to say : If Elton just wanted to jerk off, why did he go all the way to Jamaica to do it? Take that candlewax out of your ears and listen to the LYRICS!
E-MAIL: CyclicAMP@hotmail.com
Forget all the great hits on this album; the best song is "Roy Rogers".
E-MAIL: smokeyjoe
I like to EAT at 'Roy Rogers'; I'd rather listen to something like 'Harmony' than that one.
E-MAIL: sickof@diana.com
HARMONY? MAN THAT SONG IS JUST A FILLER. 2 MINUTES AND 45 SECONDS AND NOTHING BUT A CATCHY LITTLE DITTY; NOT MY STYLE. THERE ARE BETTER SONGS. THE ONLY CRAP SONG ON THIS ALBUM IS DIRTY LITTLE GIRL BECAUSE HE TRIES TO SING HARDROCK ON IT AND BECAUSE THE TUNE IS A RIPOFF OF BENNIE AND THE JETS. P.S. I DON'T THINK MUCH OF SMOKEYJOE. HE DEFACED THE LOVELY DIANA PARODY ALBUM THAT SOMEONE PUT UP. P.P.S. IS viperx09 STILL AROUND? OR HAS HE RUN AWAY??
E-MAIL: viperx09
I'm sorry but I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one, sickof@diana.com. I think "Harmony" is great, even though "Roy Rogers" is underrated and should be played on the radio. Smokey Joe, I think, is trying to get a laugh and he succeeded somewhat with me. "Dirty Little Girl" is as classic a rock song as Elton is going to write...it's very 'Rolling Stone'-ish. Not that I'm a big fan of them. But I can hear the influence and whenever I play this song on my radio, it makes me want to punch smokey joe in the face!
E-MAIL: smokeyjoe
HA, HA, HA. Don't try to kiss my ass, VIPER. You are just slightly more amusing than 'sick-of-Di and myself' over there. Thanks for taking my side on the "Harmony" issue, though.
E-MAIL: CYCLICAMP@HOTMAIL.COM (the real sickof)
Smokey joe, stop hitting guys below the belt. Go pop Locker Rooms on some other page. Get a !@*#^&* life. If you have any guts, try e-mailing the above address rather than cramming up these pages. You SUCK.
E-MAIL: smokeyjoe
Nope, won't e-mail you. My answer to you is at the 'Capt. Fantastic' page. Later.

The absolute best piece of work that Elton has ever did. Funeral for a friend is a rock legend. I also like the slow ballad of Harmony. I have almost every Elton John album , but treasure this one the most.
Don`t really know why I submitted this, I don`t like it thatmuch. It`s my parent`s sort of music. Listen to this if youare approaching middle age.Dont you HATE Elton John???Anyone who can make four syllables from the wordSACRIFICE has to be a plank.Bleugh!
mambrico@optonline.net
While Captain Fantastic is my favorite Elton John album, Yellow Brick Road is his masterpiece. I believe it is heavily underated when you see the lists of the best albums of all time. It clearly should always be within the top twenty, if not, top ten of all time. Funeral for a Friend is the best rock instrumental of all time.
MORRIS@KILROYSPARTS.COM
THIS ALBUM IS A MASTERPIECE...IF YOU ARE A MARTIAN AND WANTED TO LISTEN TO ONE SONG THAT SUMS UP ELTON JOHN/BERNIE TAUPINS SONGS,LISTEN TO "THE BALLAD OF DANNY BAILEY".THIS SONG IS THE QUINESSENTIAL RECORDING OF THIER SOUND AND OF THIS ALBUM.ONLY CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWNDIRT COWBOY (MAYBE...TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION)CAN SIT ON THE SHELF WITH THIS ONE.
