Comments for John, Elton, Rock of the Westies

This marks the beginning of a series of distinct shifts in Elton's sound. Here, he experiments with the "Southern California" sound that was made popular at the time by groups like The Eagles, etc. For the most part it works. Just for grins, listen to the first track ("Medley: Yell Help/Wednesday Night/Ugly") and see if you can hear LaBelle doing back-up vocals.

I consider this to be an album that in many parts fails to reach the listener, except for one great song: I fell like a bullet...which on the other hand is one of my favourites since the middle of the seventies when i bought it as a single. If my memory doesnīt fail me the tune was a b-side on the "Grow some funk of your own"-single (which I donīt really care for.

I agree with micael.soderberg above completely. The album is forgettable pretty much, but 'Bullet' is one of my all time Elton favorites, one of my all time favorites, period.

It would seem to me that this album's purpose was not only to follow up on the Captain Fantastic success, but primarily to introduce the new band. If you listen to the original masters, the band is always in the forefront of the master, drowning out Elton's voice. Ask yourself on how many songs can you really hear Elton singing calmly and clearly and not as if he's tied up across the room belting out his voice in competiton with the band? One--and we all know which one--the only good song on the disc, Robert Ford. I do not own the remaster, I bought all my favourites on the Polydor label because I thought you couldn't get any better. Consequently, all my least favourites are left to be replaced by the surperior remastered series... not fair!

are you all nuts? i feel like a bullet is a whiny piece of crap at least by elton and bernie's standards .this album kicks some butt and although it is lyricly shallow we get some high quality rocknroll as compensation.while they may not be dickeybetts and duane allman , davey johnstone and caleb quaye show some dual guitar interplay that is quite impressive. it's a shame that the focus on the next album swithched over to the bathetic keyboard work of james newton-howard. this is one of the very few elton albums i listened to between the times when i listened to him alot .

What the hell are all you losers (including Mike Crawley) talking about???? Elton was only STARTING to do drugs when he made this album, and the music is a clear reflection of that! I like "Island Girl", "Robert Ford", and "Hard Luck Story", but other than those three, for the most part this album sucks!

Disappointing work folowing the heights of Captain Fantatstic, however vastly improved on the Ble Moves where the band and production was superb.
