Comments for John, Elton, Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy

Probably the second most crucial album to have after "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." This is a song cycle album -- one in which the songs tie together lyrically and musically to tell a story -- that chronicles the duo's early years as starving London musicians (e.g. "Bitter Fingers," "Better Off Dead," etc.) The album has a very rich sound, with lots of usual and refreshing instrumentation, marked by the VERY strong presence of Ray Cooper, EJ's percussionist. The songs are mature and complex, but remain fun and catchy as all hell. Not commercial though, but fun nonetheless. Standouts include the title track, "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," and "Meal Ticket" (a fairly hard rocker). A must-have for any Elton collection. P.S. This album -- as many did -- entered the US charts at Number One.

This album is a must for any Elton John collection! The songs, with the exception of "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" aren't played on the radio anymore and they're not performed by Elton in concert. So in order to experience the music of Elton John written in the prime of his career you got to get the album. Its great from beginning to end so buy it, borrow it, or steal it if you have to.

Captain Fantastick and the Brown Dirt Cowboy has to be one of the very best EJ and BT works ever!! The vinyl is worn thru on the first copy. Hope the CD makes it to the next decade! Also, EJ does still perform material off this increadible album. Saw him in Montreal in Oct. 95 doing a great version of the title track!! If there could only be more of these....
E-MAIL: i dont know it
I think this album is excellent!! It is one of my favorites of Elton. (Whoever said Someone Saved My Life Tonight is not played on the radio anymore, is wrong! I heard it. Elton also sang it at the concert I went to during his Made In England For The U.S.A.tour.) ---------------------------------------------------------- ''' ' ''' ''' ' ' ''' ''' ' ' ' ' '' ' ' ' ' '' ' ' ' ' ''' '' ' ''' ''' ' ''' ' '' '' ''' ' ' ' ''

This is my favorite EJ album. People often forget what good backing musicians elton had for his earlier albums. Dee, Nigel and Davey are such great musicians and it is perfectly demonstrated on this album. Well that's my two cents...

A particularly successful combination of potent, first-rate arrangements, genuinely poetic autobiographical lyrics and top- notch playing. This album is daring in sweep, pleasantly dated in the way some of the timbric choices sound (check out the percussions and the gated voice in gems like the title cut or the forgotten "Tower of Babel" and "Tell Me When the Whistle Blows" numbers), in short absolutely original. Whether it comes with the two big booklets and the poster or in a simple CD plastic case, an absolute must!

This is one of his three best albums. "Curtains," the song that closes the album is my all-time favourite. Gosh this man's the best--and this album proves it.

as a concept album this is a great achievement. not only do the songs stand on their own they join together as a common theme. the only trouble is i don't really care about the trials and tribulations of young reg and bernie. taupin is at his best when he's at his most bitter(someone saved my life tonight and bitter fingers). elton's at his best when he conveys bernie's bitterness to the world; a wonderful combination. but do i really care? NO. great album cover though.

Elton John is at his best on this album...and "Bitter Fingers" is more fun than anything else he's ever done (It may be sarcastic, but it's still fun). And love the story of these two songwriters. "Curtains" is beautiful, and this album is clearly the end of an era...

Hey you chicken-hawk, just what do you think you're doing, hiding behind a name like 'viper'? Lame, lame. I'm sure you like this LP because you listened to it during a shot of heroin, or something. And I'm sure your best band is Pantera or some other garbage like that. By the way, Viper, this is the same guy who's sickof@diana.com. Go to hell.

Hey, bro! chill!!!!!! I'm just kidding! Jesus, thisalbum is great and your opinion of Elton is just that- your opinion. ...If you have any idea what great music really is, then you'll agree "Captain Fantastic..." is great. No hard feelings. I would like to hear your view of this album (Just a word of advice: Brush up on your knowledge of the early history of Bernie Taupin and Elton BEFORE you do give it a listen. Later.
E-MAIL: sickof@diana.com
Yeah, you got a point (several of them, in fact) there. I'm also sick of all those guys (some in quite respectable publications) who say that all Elton's lyrics are crap and don't mean a thing - just check out "Someone saved..." which is another really great, offbeat ballad (The closest modern parallel, though it isn't that good, is "Please" from Made In England.) Adios!

Okay, very funny. Maybe we SHOULD follow the advice of that guy who put up this web page (see 'The Big Picture'). Goodbye.

Er,Smokey, the guy who shouted at you and the others submitted the ALBUM.The guy who runs this page is burnett@roadkill.com. Maybe you need specs.Want mine?

hello me, nice talking to myself again (i am a schizo all of you if you haven't guessed!) I AM A POOFTER! I STILL SUCK! I AM THE WORLD'S BIGGEST DUMBASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
E-MAIL: sickof@diana.com
I must apologize for pretending I'm smokeyjoe and saying these things to all you people. You see, instead of actually letting things go like any other mature adult would, I actually like to make myself seem like a complete fucking asshole. And to help clear things up, I am here to proudly announce that I am too gay, and that my boyfriend has just shot a good load of hot cum in my face. Well, thank goodness! P.S.- forget Elton, we all know he's one of the best; how's about a little Culture Club? That Boy George is so adorable, I can hug him! P.S. 2- Also, to Trooper: smokeyjoe said web PAGE, not web site. But then again not everybody can communicate or comprehend with a mouthfull of hot cum in their mouth like I can, can they?

Hey, the things I said were rather funny! But that phoney sickof@diana.com post was really cheap.Guys who write stuff like that probably have a bedwetting problem and take it out on us humorists this way. BTW, that's my real e-mail address up there, so the big manly Viagra-guzzling testosterone-hound who put up that last brainless post can (if he does indeed have the balls to) reply to me THERE and not on this page!! BTW, you guys have made me sick of E.John. He is a poof like smokeyjoe the poseur. Long live Pearl Jam, U2, Dire Straits, Don Henley and Scorpions! None of them ever sold out or wrote Diana crap. I know Smokeyjoe is probably jerking off while he writes this stuff, so I forgive him. His cerebral blood supply was probably impaired. All right, so he's not gay. But he behaves like an IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Sorry, I'm not e-mailing you. I don't like cheap shots as much as anybody else. I say: Let's quiet down and get ourselves a sense of humor. We are on the internet and even though this is a free, uncensored forum... I hope you would agree that it isn't quite as funny when someone else is pretending to be you. Take care and farewell. Sorry about that filthy cheap shot, but I felt I needed to defend myself in SOME manner. P.S.- Just asking, but how, in your words, is Elton John a sell-out? Even VIPERX09 mentioned something about him not making any money off of that song and I know, being that he is a generous 'poof', that he probably gave it to charity... then again, you have your opinion, and I (and probably many others accessing this website) have mine. Later.

I like the music of Elton John. Obviously, the losers above me don't appreciate music for the art that it is. They let superficial things cloud their judgement. By the way, that guy on "The Big Picture" page who told everyone to grow up and turn off their computers is a really cool guy. I know him personally. He is going to go far in life. He owns one of the most complete collections of Elton music I have ever seen, he has been collecting since he was seven years old. Let's all be happy and not fight anymore. Yes, you are my friend :-).
E-MAIL: sickof@elton.com
HEY, LISTEN HERE, ELTONFAN, THIS ISN''T A PAGE TO WRITE LOVE LETTERS TO YOUR BOYFRIEND (OR WAS IT TO YOURSELF)? QUIT PLAYING WITH THIS PAGE. YOU ARE A DISMALL DUMBASS LIKE SMOKEYJOE@CRAP.COM AND THE REST OF ''EM. SO GO WATCH JERKOFF LEONARDO DICAPRIO MOVIES AND GET THE HELL OUT. P.S. I AM TOTALLY SICK OF ELTON. DON HENLEY CAN KICK HIS SORRY BUTT ANY OLD DAY, EVEN WHEN HE''S WEARING SHAVING FOAM!!
Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy was released in May 1975.It was the first album in music history to be shipped platinum. Elton had Captain Fantastic enter the record charts at number one, as well as his next twoalbums, Rock of the Westies and Blue Moves.
70's Rocker
Mr John and his crew hit the spot with this effort. Faultless production and not one weak track throughout. Very hard for Elton to top this and he was never able to reach this peak again but came close on occasions.
CAPTAIN FANTASTIC IS PROBABLY THE BEST ALBUM OF SIR ELTON'S CAREER...BESIDES THE OBVIOUS GREATNESS OF THE LYRICS/MUSIC,THERE ARE SO MANY LITTLE "JABS"AT PEOPLE/PLACES/TIMES THAT BERNIE GETS IN...MY FAVORITE IS IN THE SONG "TOWER OF BABEL"...WHEN ELTON STARTED AT UNI RECORDS IT WAS BOUGHT OUT BY MCA...CONSIDERED A "COUNTRY LABEL" PLUS NEIL DIAMOND.ELTON'S AND BERNIES TRIBULATIONS ARE WELL DOCUMENTED AND LISTEN AGAIN AS ELTON SINGS "HAVE A BALL, YA'LL".....ELTON JOHN/BERNIE TAUPIN ARE AT THE TOP OF THE SONGWRITING MOUNTAIN LOOKING DOWN AT LENNON/MCARTNEY AND JAGGER/RICHARDS.THERE IS A REASON THIS ALBUM DEBUTED AT NUMBER 1. NOT THE BEATLES,STONES,EAGLES,DYLAN OR ZEPPLIN EVER ACHIEVED THIS.CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWNDIRT COWBOY IS A FIVE STARS OUT OF FIVE ALBUM.
