Comments for Kinks, the, Something Else

Something Else marked the Kinks 'total' move away from simple love songs. While 'Face to Face' had them exploring social predicaments like sunny Afternoon and Dandy, Something Else devoted itself entirely to all those little people populating 'Kinkdom'. Songs like 'David Watts', 'Two Sisters', 'Harry Rag', and Dave's killer 'Death of a Clown' all indicate the direction the Kinks were about to take with subsequent albums: 'Village Green', 'arthur', 'Lola' and Muswell Hillbillies'

"Harry Rag" would have just KILLED on the Sullivan show, don't you think?

Don't forget to take your Afternoon Tea.

The album was actually released in late summer of '67. Well, in England anyway, but that is the original release date nonetheless.

How can you forget Lazy Old Sun, and Waterloo Sunset? or is Waterloo Sunset a bonus on the CD re-release.. not sure..

CD misses off start of Tin Soldier Man, whole ending (meant to come back in again!) of Situations Vacant. VGPS is worst on CD though. Face to Face not hot either. Please can someone re-issue them properly? And 3 of my all-time fave albums, right after the Beatles and Pet Sounds!

Tracks:(side 1)'David Watts', 'Death Of A Clown', 'Two Sisters', 'No Return', 'Harry Rag', 'Tin Soldier Man', 'Situation Vacant',(side 2)'Love Me Till The Sun Shines', 'Lazy Old Sun', 'Afternoon Tea', 'Funny Face', 'End Of The Season', 'Waterloo Sunset' message to pclharland: Can I assume that your CD is the one made by PRT Records? That's the one I bought and it has the problems you described re: 'Tin Soldier Man' and 'Situation Vacant'. So I decided to buy a copy of the Reprise Records CD, and lo and behold, that one includes both tracks in their complete state. (And it only cost me 10 bucks at Tower Records!)

I recently came upon a book that asked a variety of people what record they would want with them on a desert island. Interestingly, the film critic Janet Maslin revealed herself to be a Kinkophile. Although I didn't agree with her mild dismissal of "Muswell Hillbillies" as a sterile studio creation, and her outright scorn for "Schoolboys in Disgrace," her championing of "Something Else" was charming in a very personal way. It just shows how Ray's music and lyrics can become part of the fabric of our lives... I rate this 5th on my Kinks list, just because I like the thematic quality of the next half-dozen albums. But what a collection of songs!

My 3rd fav. Kinks album of all time.....right after "Village Green" and "Arthur." So many witty songs that find Ray and the Kinks in top form. They never did totally go for the psychedelic thing like the Beatles and countless other British Invasion groups did. Not a bad thing....though i love Psychedelic stuff. The Kinks have alot of great songs on here such as the thumping piano of "David Watts", the beautiful "Death Of A Clown", the spinechilling harpsichord of "Two Sisters", the psychedelic "Lazy Old Sun" the bouncy "Afternoon Tea", and the ultimate Ray classic "Waterlou Sunset." Not a weak cut on this charming 1967 album, though "End Of The Season" sounds a little corny for todays standards though i like it.

My favorites of the Kinks for the longest time had been all the Arista material and some of the well known hits like Dedicated Follower and Well Respected Man. I felt guilty after all these old albums were made available and have to say how much I love "Something Else". Actually, I find it much more entertaining than Village Green (which is fine, but I don''t get it the way most fans do). I play Something Else constantly.
includes "Waterloo Sunset"

This is my favorite Kinks album from my favorite period of musical time, just as psychedelia was about to explode. The bonus tracks like Autumn Almanac, Susannah's Still Alive and Wonderboy on the Castle reissue CDs send this disc over the top. I don't know why the Kinks aren't better known in the states. It can't just be the 60's touring ban.
