I think this is one of the balliest Kinks albums. I don't know if it was a reaction to the punk movement going on around that time in the U.K., but Ray and company did seem to take up the challenge of making a harder-edged album, musically and lyrically--while maintaining a melodic sophistication I found lacking in later efforts like "Give the People What They Want." In my opinion, there isn't a bad song on the album and the cover art is fantastic. Don't know if any bootlegs exist from this period, but I think they'd be fascinating. Especially a live version of "Life on the Road"--I'd love to hear the audience react to Ray singing, "Hey, are you gay? Can you come up to play? And like a fool I went and said okay..."

In answer to the question about bootlegs from this period, there is a recording of the 1977 Winterland concert in San Francisco which appeared both as a double LP and as two separate LPs back in the late 70s.

This is one of my favorite KINKS albums - I was 28 yrs old back in 77 and livin in San Mateo and I remember that KSAN didn't give much AIRPLAY - Refecting back It was very difficult being a KINKS FAN in the 70's because you always thought that you were the only one buying KINK records!! Boy have times change! GOD SAVE The KINKS - a dedicated fan since l965

I really blew it back in in '87. I had a copy of Sleepwalker (CD) in my hands, but I thought that CD was just a passing fad. I didn't buy it. Then a few years later my wife sold my album collection to a second hand store. The next day I tried to recover what I could, but they were gone. Gone also are the memories of Celluloid Heroes (a greatest hits, that I loved) and Sleepwalker. Both have been un-replaceable. Although I have managed to find (and buy) most of the 400+ albums that were sold (without my permission), I have yet to find "Sleepwalker" and "Celluloid Heroes", vinyl or CD. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Jack

My, My...this is some disc, every song, I rate excellent excepting one I would rate as good. The next album after Schoolboys, they are both entertaining to listen to one after the other. Despite the connotation of Arthur as a 10 rating (and I did give it a 10, this one a nine, after more listenings), I like this one as much as about any Kinks album except for "The Kinks are the Village Green Society." "Brother" and "Stormy Skies" are my favorite. Good to see the humane oriented writing by Ray. By the way, long reputed as being difficult to get, I did by a Cassette of it, not a cd. One can tell when they really like a release, if they play it frequently, even though it is just a tape. In My Humble Opinion.
The Kinks first album on the fledging Arista label and verymuch a landmark. For as well as being the first Aristaalbum it represents the first non concept album sincearguably Something Else. Some great songs which are softer, more subtle than RCA years Kinks. More listenable too.
