Comments for Kiss, Gene Simmons

Well, as Gene said in X-Treme Close Up,"I gotta be me." And he certainly was just that on this Barnum and Baily-esq release. He didn't pay much attention to one-two punch type attitude he gave "God of Thunder" two years prior; but, to the same end, he wasn't exactly trying to either. One hell of an interesting record. This departure from the standard KISS releases tends to disclose one undisputable fact, the man has balls of solid granite. Thanks for listening, COLD GIN.

Itīs not a Kiss-album. Itīs an album from G. Simmons and he showed which kind of music he could make. There are different kinds of music on the album and the most songs are very very good

Peter's may remain the most unlistenable of the bunch, but at least Peter release something that meant something to him. Gene's on the other hand is more listenable but more of a disaster than Peter's. IT's a solo cut between the Gene we know (Living In Sin, Tunnel of Love) and pure schmaltz (Mr. Make Believe, Always Near You). The only problem with all of it, is that none of it was executed very well. It's executed, very poorly, as a matter of fact. Plus, Gene, wanting to make his the biggest solo of all, got every celeb to back him up , but every celeb-backup just expose the mediocrity of the material and make Gene come off as a cheesy Vegas diva. The Chessy Vegas "feel" of the record reaches an all-time high when Cher makes a "Telephone" guest appearance on Living In Sin. Finally, Gene runs out of ideas with his cheesy stuff and stacks side 2 with fillers as a Kiss song that got rejected (Man of 1000 Faces) , a pointless remake of "See You in Your Dreams" and finally, an embarassing remake of "When You Wish upon an Star" All of this easily makes Gene's the worst of the bunch.

Some songs like "See you tonight" or "Always near you" are valuable. But the overall is still pretty poor and has nothing to do with Gene Simmons'' previous work with Kiss.
Not the most popular, but the longest and personally mostsatisfying. Oh, the long gone days of 1978/9...

Kudos to nimmo@ix.netcom.com for stealing my thunder. While not a complete throwaway, there are several moments that'll make one cringe....

Did you read Gene's book? Apparently, Ace had a big rocket in his pocket (if you get my meaning).
