Comments for Madredeus, O Espírito da Paz

Madredeus has to be one of the revelations of the year. Using a very distinctive fado style this very talented band has won over fans all over Europe. Group vocalist Maria Teresa Salgueiro sings with such purity and grace that the listener cannot help but be moved. Indeed, the fado, which is a folk Portuguese music style is known for its sad, melancholic melodies. And here Salgueiro is excellent in her rendition. She is backed by a very capable band which has demonstrated its unique songwriting abilities. I was fortunate to see Madredeus in concert and must say that their performance is exhilirating. All of Europe knows about Madredeus. Let us hope that Americans will discard their obsession with English lyrics. Madredeus has proven that music truly is an international language. Oh and one more thing. As for singing capability, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey are talented indeed but Maria Teresa Salgueiro is in a class by herself.
