Fantasia is a form which has existed for some time and hasmeant different things in different periods; however,generally speaking, "a composition in which the `free flightof fancy` prevails over contemporary conventions of form,style, etc...sometimes used to indicate a dream-like mood."--Harvard DictionaryThis piece was conceived as though looking into an arena ofdoors, behind which are feelings to be experienced. Thetheme will be subjected to these different doors(subheadings) and avoided in others ("free flight of fancy"...poetic license?). The theme is portrayed in the choralein the innocence of recorders and in an idiom similar tothat of the 16th century, the period the fantasia was firstpracticed.
