Comments for McLean, Don, American PieE-MAIL: carlj@ais.net "American Pie" is easily one of the best songs ever made.E-MAIL: phogart@vertex.ucls.uchicago.edu "American Pie" is by far the greatest song ever known to mankind. What other song in history combines such cryptic and enigmatic lyrics, with so many references? Unlike all those meaningless punk songs, with their meaningless messages, analyzing "American Pie" (or any other Don McLean song for that matter) is truly an endless but stimulating experience. "Vincent" is a beautiful tribute to the artist Vincent Van Gogh. It is McLean's second most famous song. "Everybody Loves Me, Baby" is a (somewhat humorous) look at corrupt and egocentric dictators.E-MAIL: truth@hurts Don Mclean is a sorry washed up loser, who treats his opening acts like shit,..walks around like his shit don't stink.Has been!E-MAIL: ktersteg@kingsnet.com I am a true Bealtes fan, but when I sadly could not buy a $25 Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, my uncle promised me that he would give me his record collection. Lo and behold--I was given American Pie. With an awed interest i spent the night listening over and over to American Pie. The music struck me as beautiful--simple but beautiful. The words...mystified and confused me, but they grabbed at me and kept me wondering. Again and again I've listened to my favorite song in the world....trying to catch the meaning and enjoying his deep, melodic voice. Don McLean's music is truly that of a wandering poet--keeping people young and old intuned to the more philosophical aspects of life. Don McLean--my wandering poet. "And the three men that I admire most. The Father, Son and Holy Ghost. They took the last train for the coast. The day the Music Died. So Bye-bye, Miss american Pie. Drove my chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry. Them good ol' boys were drinking whiskey and rye andd singing this will be the day that I die. This will be the day that I die..........E-MAIL: woohaw@check.org this song is so cool it got me in check -woohawE-MAIL: brehmer@students.wisc.edu I love American Pie, the album and the song. Not only is the song on off the best ever, there are many more great hits on the album.E-MAIL: w.schokman@elvis.murdoch.edu.au Brilliance on vinylE-MAIL: dannyq@bellatlantic.net E-MAIL: dannyq@bellatlantic.net American Pie captured and time and predicted a time. The rock and roll "reporters" back then were totally confounded by Mclean's refusal to give them his meaning of the lyrics. They were very accustomed to getting any cooperation they asked for from stars back then. Mclean basically told them that the song means whatever you think it means. And it does. The magic of that song is that the felling it generates is unique for each person. To this day they are many "reporters" who still can't follow that. Don, after 25 years....they're not gonna get it!E-MAIL: Rider327@aol.com The thing that is remarkable about "American Pie" is that (assuming the history) of rock and roll begins in 1955), much more time has elapsed since the song was recorded and released than the span of history the song actually covers. The fact that people still wonder what the Sacred Store was, or who the Players were, indicates McLean's gift for mythologizing rock culture is still evident all these years later.E-MAIL: ass E-MAIL: v man it is coolE-MAIL: pccal@quartz.nbnet.nb.ca American pie is a true classic and Vincent is an extremly moving visage about a misunderstood genius much like Mr Mclean himself.E-MAIL: Mindy Murphy I'm only 14 years old and I heard "American Pie" on the juke box where I work and I totally fell in love with the song because it was so easygoing. Then I read up on the song and learned the meaning of the words and I loved it even more!!!!! Love Your Biggest Fan, Mindy MurphyE-MAIL: nightfly@donet.com Don's finest record, "American Pie" is a truly outstanding, monumental contribution to the singer/songwriter genre (now a lost art). The title track is certainly one of the top five greatest songs ever written. It has not decayed in meaning, become dated, or lost it's appeal in any way after all this time. The same is true for the rest of the album. "The Grave" still brings tears to my eyes; "Empty Chairs" is still utterly haunting and poignant; "Everybody Loves Me Baby" still rocks hard, with scathing lyrics intact; and "Till Tomorrow" remains sweet and warm in it's simplicity. This is definitely one of the saddest albums I've ever heard, ranking right up there with Sinatra's "Only The Lonely" and Marvin Gaye's "Here My Dear". Don never made an an album with all the songs being as consistently good as on "American Pie" again, yet almost all of his records are worth hearing for the frequent classics that they contain. Unfortunately, the CD version of this record is not quite up to snuff--it needs to be remastered or better yet, given the "Gold Disk" treatment it deserves. Viva "American Pie"--and thank you Don! SP, 11/5/96, Dayton Ohio USAE-MAIL: ecu05@central.susx.ac.uk This is a very good album. However, when compared to the rest of the 'great Don's' abysmal collection of other albums, it stands out even further. Good luck to Don and his songwriting in the future - I fear he may need it. However some of his newer albums are not as good as American Pie but I did like his Best of Don Maclean Cd as that was quite good.
