Comments for Asia, Asia

With "Heat of the Moment" and "Only Time Will Tell" this album marked Asia's entry into the rock world. Their 2 most successful songs of all time, they are easily the best on the album. "Without You" is a nice, slower tune, and "Wildest Dreams" has some scary lyrics, but is a good song.

I find all the songs very good in their debut album. I became a fan of Geoff Downes since his experience with Yes in 1980, and "Drama" is one of my favourite albums. I must admit that I prefer Asia (possibly with Steve Howe) to 80's Yes (90125 and Big Generator).... "Time again" seems to take inspiration from "Machine Messiah", doesn't it..? If the era of commercial pop-rock were to arrive, Asia chose the right direction. G. L.

A great album from a well known line-up of members from other big bands. Any musician will cherish such a performance, moresoever as a debut album. Surely one of my hot favourites. Heat of the moment, Without you, Wildest dreams, Sole survivor are all time great numbers. The powerful voice of Wetton and the keyboard virtuosity of Downes are noteworthy. A very well orchestrated album with beautiful melodies, so much so that one is compelled to listen to the full album at a streach and appreciate all the numbers.

ASIA - ASIA is a great album from one of the foremost names in prog. Its pedigree is well established - John Wetton (UK, King Crimson), Geoff Downes (Yes, the Buggles), Carl Palmer (ELP), and Steve Howe (GTR, Yes). Four men meshed as good as be, and the sound is evident. There isn't a dull track on the disc. They just missed a Grammy in 82 to "Men At Work." Everyone has to love this one!

I enjoy Steve Howe's guitars with Yes, and I was blown away by Geoff Downes in the Drama album. I like this album more and more each time I listen to it. Accept for Sole Surviver, wich for some reason, doesn't seem it goes with Wetton's voice. I agree that lyricly some songs are lacking, but when you expect something like YES lyrics, your gunna be let down by Asia. Howe's preformance was a slight step down from the Drama masterpiece. So was Geoff Downes, but I still enjoyed it. Palmer was excellent, putting Bill Bruford and even partially Allan White to shame. I'm not a Wetton fan, and would have prefurred Anderson, Payne, Squires, Geddy Lee (RUSH), or Trevor Horn as a replacement.

Only Time Will Tell is my favorite song on this album. IMHO, they should have left One Step Closer off the album. The only flaw in this gem of an album.

This is one of my alltime favourites. I have loved this album since it was released. All songs are great though I agree that "One Step Closer" is the weakest of them. John shares the lead vocal on this one with Steve and this was not a good idea. Otherwise this album is perfect. I wish they would release a remastered cd with the song "Ride Easy", which was the B-side of the "Heat Of the Moment" single, as a bonus track. This is as great a song than all the other tracks on this stunning debut album. Geoff Downes is my favourite keyboarder and songwriter. I would even say he's my favourite rock musician. I think he is very underrated. Steve Howe is one of the greatest guitar players of this planet, although or because he is the antithesis of a hardrock guitarist. His style is absolutely unique, as is the guy himself if I may say so. John Wetton has a great voice and is also a great bass player. His songwriting is very good. I like the often harshly critisized Asia lyrics. They fit perfectly to their bombastic rock. Carl Palmer may not be one of the world`s finest drummers, especially when it comes to playing a steady beat, but he is great in his own way. As with Howe his nervous style is absolutely unique. Enough of the raving (did I mention the great production work of Mike Stone?). This album is GREAT! If you don't have it, buy it. If you only know "Heat of the Moment" and like it, buy it. You will like the other tracks as well. If you don't like Asia, buy it...because of the greatest cover artwork of all time. (Maybe you should then search the second hand stores for the LP.)

This album when released was so overrated! Pop crap! Yes'' 90125 album blows it off the map! The rest of the artsy fartsy weird King Crimson, Yes, Asia stuff BLOWS! Some ELP is good. For the most part they are tiresome too! The trully great progressive rock comes from Pink Floyd and The Moody Blues!
