Comments for Asia, Alpha

This album is definitely worth having, although not one of Asia's best. It seems that they were in a bit of a hurry to put another album together after the success of their debut.

One of the (few) Asia songs I don't really like much is "Don't cry". Although not of the same level as "Asia", "Alpha" is on the whole a good album ...(maybe a bit too melodic ?), and unfortunately the last one with the original line-up. GL

At first listen I didn't like this album at all, but have grown to really love it. I think it is one of their best albums ever. "My own time" and "open your eyes" are two of the best songs in my opinion. Take the time to check this one out. It's mellow but great.

ALPHA is quite possibly the greatest expression in modern music of the power of the keyboardist in a band. Apologies to Keith Emerson, I feel that Geoffrey Downes was the star of this band from start to finish, and this album contains a whole hoary host of tracks featuring Downes on the synths, Hammond, Wurlitzer, and the classic grand piano. Guitarist Steve Howe fled the band shortly after because of decreased playing time, since Geoff Downes became the rhythm and solo section for ASIA. For moree on Geoff Downes, listen to the Buggles, AGE OF PLASTIC, Yes, DRAMA, Downes' solo albums VOX HUMANA, LIGHT PROGRAM, and EVOLUTION, as well as the continuing exploits of ASIA.

I don''t have much to say about this album because not much needs to be said, it''s very nearly perfect. The only thing wrong with it is that it was over produced. It didn''t have the same live, unfiltered sound the first album had. I understand why this is but it sucks just the same. Their are certain truthes to the music business that any recording artist is aware of. Asia achieved a success with their debut album that probably hasn''t been seen in the industry since Boston''s first album. Making music and staying on top or even just being successful is tough because an artist wants to stay true to themselves and not compromise but the buying public is fickle and trends in popular music are ethereal so the artist must adapt. Also the record company exects are pressuring the artist to follow a success with the same success or better or, perhaps, the label will drop them so they must compromise. Every artist in every genre of music faces it; rock, country, jazz, etc. and Asia is no exception. They''re a progressive band and they want to experiment and grow but I firmly believe this is why "Alpha" sounded over produced to me. It''s a shame it has to be this way but the alternative is the group may stagnate. Thanks for reading. Any rebutals are welcome, just e-mail me.

Asia's second album. I like this album better then their first. They had time to perfect a certain style of sound. The standout songs on this album are - My Own Time, The Smile Has Left Your Eyes & Open Your Eyes. I own everything ASIA has released. These are amongst the top 20 songs Asia has released. You can find this album in the bargin bins or about $7 where I live. (San Diego)
