The istrumental track has not a very complex structure, so it is flowing even at the first listening. It opens with Airborne, which contains "Tubular beats" on vibraphones as accompanyment tunes; Platinum theme (p.2) is a formidable rock piece received with enthusiasm even by people who aren't necessarily Mike's fans; Charlestone (p.3) is a continuously transposed theme moving on the rhythm of its title that leaves the place to a rock version of North Star (P. Glass) (p.4) that ends the side. The other cover version is "I Got Rhythm" (G. Gershwin) and despite of its title it is turned to a very nice melodic song. Don't miss the incantation atmosphere of "Woodhenge" in which the guitar re-echoes "earlier excursions"... G.L.

"Platinum", although it is one of Oldfield's most generally unrecognized album, is nonetheless one of my favourites. To my rather untrained ear, it sounds like an amalgamation of jazz and rock. Side one (the complete instrumental piece of music) is fantastic, with great performances all round, especially the bass players. Overall, a very enjoyable album to listen to, really gets the toes tapping. (Check out my Oldfield homepage: http://superior.carleton.ca/~pwigfull/mike.html)
