Comments for Oldfield, Mike, QE2

QE2 is the first album that breaks out the pattern of one side long compositions. It signs a decise step towards a track format closer to 80's rock music, during which many great groups moved to more commercial music. It has P. Collins as guest musician (Taurus I and Sheba) and other two cover versions (Arrival and Wonderful Land). I find this album very good. Mirage and Conflict are powerful miniatures, and QE2 track itself has that unequivocable immediate appeal which is Mike's best trademark. G.L.

My main criticism with this album is that it sounds too "tinny". The music, or at least the arrangements, sound too tinny and the reliance on synthesizers makes the whole thing seem rather superficial. There are some great moments, though, and perhaps if he reworked this album with better arrangements it would gain my respect. My opinion only, of course.

Despite it contains some ofthe best Oldfield, QE2 lacks on unity. "QE2" is one of my best (epic and thunderous). "Mirage" is elegant and challenging. "Taurus" is an hypnotic piece with one marvelous finale part (also "QE2"). But, sadly, the rest is uneven. (Carlos Martinez)

The one thing that draws me to all of Mike Oldfield's works, especially his instruments, is the impression that a story is begging to be tolded from his compositions. QE2, even though it is not as refined as some would like, has elements that conjure visions in your mind of something epic and very touching. Indeed, the album made me pen a story to it. My favorite elements are the inspirational, otherworldly last two minutes of "Taurus", the pair of songs: "Sheba" and "Arrival" with their elegant and powerful vocals, a similar tie-together occurs with "Molly" and "Wonderful Land" using the guitar, and "QE2" blossoms from a gentle dream into a vast, surging triumph, bringing the ending of "Taurus" to reality.

Itīs a little bit unknown, but itīs great. I think itīs on the same level like Tubular bells.
