Comments for Oldfield, Mike, The Orchestral Tubular Bells

E-MAIL: lacorata@vxscaq.aquila.infn.it
The best part is surely the guitar solo on the final section. With this I mean that on the whole I prefer the original version. The orchestral version gives "Tubular bells" a neo-classical atmosphere, but in several pieces it loses a bit of effectiveness of some ideas. G.L.

The idea isn't bad, considering Tubular Bells is supposed to be an excursion in classical composition in the first place. However, the performance itself is a little weak: The brass flubs a few times, the tubular bells are too soft being they are unamplified.. however, the kettle drum and percussion sections RULE -- especially in the 'Piltdown Man' part of the piece. I miss the rich and personal quality of the original Tubular Bells instruments, but the orchestra adds additional might to some sections of Tubular Bells. Overall, it is a fascinating supplement to the original, but it can't overshadow the power of the original.

The Orchestral Version - often criticised, but in some waysI prefer it to the original. In particular the guitar playingin the final section.
