Comments for Pet Shop Boys, Very

E-MAIL: amotamen@iastate.edu
I work at a college radio station ( well IOWA STATE U) and one of our DJs said he was haunted by the very CD, because we put our dics by spine and when you are staring at 3000 plus CDs it is very hard to get noticed from far off. Hand it to the boys to GET NOTICED AND SPOOKthe DJ out. Marvelous album.

I originally put comments for this album on Very Relentless, and then checked Very itself out. I can't believe there aren't more comments to this CD! It is by far the best album!

These songs are absolutely fabulous. From top to bottom, nearly every song delivers. I never understood the message of "Dreaming of the Queen" until someone pointed it out. Great song. Handles the subject matter better than "To Speak Is a Sin." The homocentric coyness does get a little tiring. Okay, fine, your're gay. You go, girl. How about singing with inclusive lyrics? Just a minor bitch, that. Still a great disc.

Words cannot describe how good this album is. Each song is perfect. "Can You Forgive Her?", "I Would,nt..", "Liberation"......actually EVERY song is wonderfull and deserves a mention!!!!! By the way, isn't the cover the best ever seen?

"Very" is the Pet Shop Boys at their very best. Just when music was once again beginning to take itself too seriously, along come the Boys to show us how to have fun. However, some of the lyrics beneath the multilayered saccharine synths are bittersweet: "Dreaming of the Queen" laments AIDS casualties ("And there were no more lovers left alive...no one had survived..."), and homelessness in "The Theatre". The album's sheer density and expressiveness is amazing: the Pets offer the battle cry of a gay man sleeping with a woman ("Can You Forgive Her?") and layer with meaning the simple acts of sleeping on a shoulder and clasping hands ("Liberation"). Neil's vocals have never been more expressive, as he spits out "Yesterday, When I Was Mad," and makes "Young Offender" reverberate with longing. Sterling; this album cements the Pets' place as one of the world's best pop acts ever.

As for whoever dislikes PSB's "homoerotic coyness," Foreigner is always available if you prefer heterosexual bombast.
